Yea! A great race for me. This was the biggest race I have been in, and having a large crowd was fun. A PR for all over 5K races!! I saw Renee' for the first time in 6 months, and she was there cheering me on, so that made it special. She did not run. Jeff was there for the first time, and ran the 2mile. Valerie ran the 2 mile, and so did Doug, who was also there for the first time. I was the only family member doing the 4 mile. Standing in line I was cold, so I was especially happy when the gun went off. There were a lot of good runners in this race, and I should have started further back. Lots and lots of runners passed me right away. My family cheered me on, and Valerie took my picture. I was tired as soon as we hit the small incline and going past the community garden. I kept telling myself to keep running, and that every step counted, and I knew from experience that I would feel better after a short while. Sure enough, the second mile was easier, and the run was fun for the next two miles. I conferred with my inner coaching staff, and paid attention to what I was doing. I took water at the 2 mile place, drank half and threw the rest over my head, so I was plenty warm by then. I had a little pack around me for almost the whole race. We were the people at the far back of the race. Two or three groups of two middle age women. Two single women. Two 11 yr. old girls, who I kept passing and re passing for miles, and who had no concept of where whey should be on the trail. They would let me by, but I never knew where on the path they would be. Finally I nicely told them that it was nice when they both moved over to to the right, "sort of like driving a car", and they were pleasant, and then minded the rules. Also a few little kids. The second and third miles were just fine - I did my best, and knew I was on my time. Mile four started out OK, but by the second half of it, I was trying to figure how much further it was. The last half mile was hard. I walked a very few steps, but the one woman who was my biggest competitor was bugging me, so I poured on the heat. I didn't have a lot of energy soon enough at the end, but was very happy that I did so well. Renee' was right there for me , and then Valerie showed up soon with water, which I really needed, and had not seen at the finish line. I'm very happy I did so well. There was no awards ceremony for this race, and that was too bad. Maybe I was first in my age category. A good race!
