Notes
Official time: 46:24. Still got 3rd in my age group somehow.
The weather was nice, although it would have been perfect if they held the race at 8:00 instead of 9:30. It was in the low-to-mid 50's with no sun instead of 60 and starting to warm up.
I felt a little fresher than usual. I think I like resting 2 days prior and doing some easy running the day before instead of resting the day before.
First 10k ever, so I didn't know what to expect. The course is very hilly. I maintained about the same pace as my 6 mile tempo runs, except on hills instead of the relatively flat trail around Southlakes. I consciously held back for much of the race to make sure I didn't flame out, and I think I could have pushed a bit harder. I didn't feel nearly as whipped at the end as I usually do after a 5k, so I don't think this represents 100% effort, but it'll be a good benchmark for later.
The first mile was steady uphill. Some lady was really breathing hard after like half a mile and I was wondering why she was in this race. The second mile was downhill and came fairly easily, but I was definitely holding back so my HR didn't go much over 177. I shot for 178 and 179 on the next few miles, then just over 181 for mile 5, then mile 6 I didn't worry about HR. I probably could have been a little more aggressive, but I'll know next time.
5k split: 23:15.21
