Wow! What an incredible experience!
Darrin invited me down to race the Firecracker Mile in Sedalia, MO. I thought it sounded like a great idea just to see how I could do. My goal was to to break 8:00/mile. I knew I wanted to be around 2 min per 1/4. I started a little fast in the 1st 50 yards and then came to my senses and backed off a little. I was around 1:48 at the 1st 1/4, 3:45 at the 1/2, 5:45 at 3/4 and finished the race at 7:29. The last 1/4 was up hill to the finish. I think I passed 10 people going up the hill and was feeling very strong. At the last corner Steve Platt and Darrin Young were cheering me on and 75 yards later was Kevin Funk...all high school buddies. I had nothing left at the end...Very cool!!
As it turns out, I got 1st place in my age group in the novice division. Wow!!
