Notes

Fantastic Race-- what a difference a year makes! I came in 12 minutes 51 seconds faster than I did last year... this time finishing 2nd in my age group (30-39)! Super psyched about this!

Once again, scoping out the crowd before the race, I was able to pretty much predict who was going to come in first. Turns out I was once again correct!

Last year there were some high school track runners that demolished everybody in this race. For some reason, this year the turnout sucked by comparison. There were a only 59 people this year, as opposed to last year which had 144. Not sure what the deal was.

Anyways, there was one high schooler who set out pretty quick. He wasn't my target by any means-- but I ended up catching up to him at around mile 2.2 or so. When I got next to him, he quickly picked up the pace, and relentlessly pushed ahead, refusing to let me get the lead. I didn't push, because I really wasn't concerned with beating HIM-- I wanted to come in at a sub 7 minute pace-- or better yet, sub 21! So THAT was my focus. Not beating him. He had other plans, however. He pushed harder everytime I got next to him. I could tell that he was pushing harder than he should-- he was going to gas himself pretty quickly! There was a mild hill coming up, and I SUCK at hills, so as we ascended it, I slowed up just a tad. He took this as a sign of weakness apparently, and gave it some extra gusto, sprinting ahead and widening the lead. But by the time he got to the top-- that was it! It's all he had! I kept my slow and steady pace up, and ended up walking by him. This time, once I passed him, it wasn't hard to keep the lead-- he didn't have anything left in the reserves!

This little back and forth was the highlight of the race for me! It gives me a sense of confidence that my old ass is able to beat SOMEBODY who's half my age!!

But, on that note-- let's flip the script. The second place finisher was a 52 year old who came in at a whopping 6:10 pace-- 19:11:02 finishing time!! WOW!! There's my humbling moment of the race. But, at the same time, that just gives me hope that I can continue to improve and do better, despite my age! :-)
