I'll third the Indy marathon in October. Louisville in October is also nice, flat and fast. As for this:

Giving a shout for my home town... Check out The Quad Cities marathon. It is almost in October, September 27th Wink

I think it is a nice choice if you are interested in a race without swarms of people, only 692 racers last year. "For the last 12 years, The Quad Cities Marathon, a USATF certified course and Boston Marathon qualifier, has been held annually in September. The event covers 5 races, 4 cities, 3 bridges, 2 states, and 1 Island, all along the mighty Mississippi River.The 26.2 mile run starts and ends in downtown Moline, IL."
