Can the 305 act like a really expensive stopwatch...for timing other people, can it do splits too?

I believe so. You just push the lap button or use the autolap feature. I have not used mine yet so I could be wrong.

Focus on breaking 1000 miles for the year.
22:00-23:00 for 5K (maybe)

Yep. I've almost given up on trying to figure out what it can't do from a running standpoint. Although obviously in your case, you'd have to ignore whatever distance/pace numbers you got b/c you'd be standing still when taking those times (although you could switch it to indoor mode causing it to not look for satellites and thus not do pace/distance).

Bottom line is yes, you could use it that way. And upload all of those times/splits to your computer.
20th Century: 800m: 2:04 |1600m: 4:37 |3200m: 10:06 |5k: 16:23 |10k: 35:38 |15k: 54:20 |25k: 1:35:59
21st Century: 5k: 19:42 |10k: 43:00
