Interesting Solution - Might Help Others (Read 561 times)

Buffalo Gal Rides Again

Recap from previous post: "Ran six miles on the treadmill on Sunday. And, my THIRD toe ended up bruised/jammed to the point that I couldn't really run anymore. Had the same trouble in my last Half Marathon" I should note that this problem usually results in having to walk in open-toe shoes for 2-3 days afterwards. Upshot on this problem that occasionally also includes my right foot going numb: Went to the local running store and heard dreaded words from their specialist "there isn't a shoe in this store that can help solve your problem." Turns out my toes on the left foot lay flat and so I have no problem with my left foot. But, on the right foot, my toes curl in so that "every step is like running in shoes too small" and they bang on every step against the bottom of the shoe" says they. A solution from them - maybe surgery, but find a podiatrist that runs or at least understands running. Ok. This is not really option at the end of snow globe season here in Michigan. I wanna run and run now. So, I ran slightly over five miles today with lambs wool under my toes on the right foot. While the problem is not really resolved, I ran fine today with the banging absorbed by the lambs wool, not the bottom of the shoe. The real test will be during a couple of upcoming races... Found the lambs wool in the foot section of Meijers.

It's good that you resolved one of the symptoms, but you probably want to get this checked out once the podiatrists come out of hibernation anyway. Toes curling down like that could indicate a serious biomechanical problem, and the next problem caused by it could be much more serious and much more long-term than bruised toes. Beware of amateur orthopedic theory.

Thanks so much ... I know this is a temporary fix to a larger problem. I have my physical in two weeks and this will be a major topic of conversation. Have to get a recommendation from the primary physician to see a specialist... I don't need to tell all of you how frustrating this is. I'm finally running pretty well for an old girl.
