Hi guys. I've seen a couple of commercials or something like that for races where you just get down and out dirty. Jumping in mud, running through water, basically a crash course through a trail and call it a race. It looks awesome and I want to do one. The only thing I found are the Xterra races and they are awfully confusing.

I dont want to joing a "series" or anything, just want to try running and getting really dirty! Can anyone help? Or can anyone break this Xterra thing down to me in laymen's terms? Thanks!

BTW, I'm in Jersey so if anyone knows of anything close to me that would really help

if you look around here http://www.runningintheusa.com/RacesByState.asp?State=NJ&Month=3&RaceTypeID=0

You can find some trail races and I have checked out many of their websites and they promise creek/stream crossing, log hoping, and mud splashing.

There's a number of trail runs in the Reading/Philly area. There's a good one in OCT, with 2 stream crossings.

If you 're looking for dirt, mud, and water to splash around in and guaranteed to get muddy, then you might look for some of the muddy buddy races (Marines put on a couple, I think) or some of the cross-country races that put deliberate obstacles (like mud bogs) in their races.

If you're just looking for a trail run, which may or may not get you dirty depending on conditions, just look in race calendars. (The xterra pics on their website didn't look dirty to me.)

Here's another calendar (search on state to find stuff near you)

Oh, and yes, trail running is highly recommended for great fun.Smile "Fun" is frequently measured by dirt, mud, and blood on you at end.Smile

Some of us from work are in Guam. They are having an Xterra run this month. One of the guys has signed up. I thought about it until I saw the pictures. When they say "trail" they use that term loosely. It looked more like a scramble through the jungle than any trail run I know of. If I could swim the swim, it would be fun to give it a go.
