Goal of Sub-3 Hour Marathon (Read 15845 times)

Jim, You may as well put me back on the hopeful list. Hoping to crack 3:00 again at that little race in Boston on 4/20/09. Thanks, Dave

Please add me to the hopefuls list. I will be running my first marathon at the Honolul Marathon on Dec 14 2008. I will be happy with a 3:10:50 BQ but I think I can pull the sub 3. Slap me now and wake me up if I am aiming to high for a first marathon.

Not necessarily, but it depends on how your training has been going for the last year. What sort of mileage and quality runs have you been putting in and do you have a recent half marathon time?
        2008 Goals:
        - Sub 1:00 10 mile
        - Sub 3:00 marathon

Exactly Tells us a little about your running history, training plan, Miles per Week, recent races. I will introduce myself Running since July 2003 (actually I was jogging and walking a lot at the start) Mileage 2004 3858 Best Marathon 2:56 10k 38:17 2005 4907 Best Marathon 2:49 10k 36:45 2006 4754 Best Marathon 2:45 10k 35:46 2007 3974 (Injured Sept 07 - End of Feb 08) Best Marathon 2:50 10k 37:03 2008 YTD 3689 Best Marathon 2:57 10k 37:53 Could appear that I am going backward, but 2007 I struggled the whole year with the injury, I was actually in great shape for June Marathon - It was hot and I blew up. Taking 6 months off 07-08 and I have lacked a lot of focus in 2008. After injury I trained 7 weeks to Boston = 3:07 then 3 more weeks to Ice Age 50 mile trail race = 7:36 and then 4 more weeks to FANS 24 hour race = 123.57 miles. After this I pretty much ate and drank the summer away. I am back and motivated and ready to start training in the 100-120 MPW range (After this recovery week) I am sure most have picked up on this already, but weight is always an issue. I have never raced under 200 pounds. in 2006 I was right around 200 pounds. At 6'3 I can realistically weight 175-180. I have 3 things I enjoy doing that make weight difficult: 1) Eat 2) drinking 3) Lifting Weights. The weights I try and keep low key and I have taken off a lot of muscle - But I will never have the chest, back and shoulders of a runner. I really dislike 5ks and don't care if I ever run one again. The longer the race, the more competetive I am. In the 3 ultra that I have run I have 1-1st, and 2-2nds. The key to a good ultra is endurance and the ability to consume calories while you run. hubbardsw - You do not have to write a book like I just did, but I joined a month or so ago, so I was sharing my background with the group. 2009 will see me turn 40 and my goals set a PR in 5 mile(29:07), 10k(35:46), 1/2 marathon(1:21:46). marathon(2:45:58) and 24 hour race (123.57 miles) - I have enjoyed the support of this group and hope the thread continues. Great running, D Bock, in the Trails to Rails. I'll put you down for another in January. Congrats to you too, John "norrin_radd", on your big run at Santa Barbara. I see that you were way up there in the overall standings in a good sized field. Please take care of that knee--you are in good form now. You are on the schedule for another one at Boston, dacook. Got you too, hubbardsw. Welcome!

Jim - I know some people have requested I fill out a training log - Looks too complicated to me. I do not track any of my speeds except when I am doing speedwork. Even then often I just run 5x5 minutes hard or 20-25 minutes at T or 4x10 minutes at T or a long tempo - Its an effort thing not a time thing. The darn log seems to want me to enter my pace. I have no plans on start tracking my pace ... so, I do not think I will be filling out the training log. I do post my training weeks under the 40x40 thread in the Masters forum.

I have been running off on on for about 8 years, more off then on. Broke my foot last year and gained 70 pounds. Finallly healed and decided to run the weight off. Started running in Jan again and went from 240 to 160 since. Began running in Jan little runs (3-5 miles). I started to get faster and feeling the addiction to running more so then ever before. In august my brother challenged me to run the Honolulu Marathon with him. His faster time is 3:14:00. I signed up and began "Marathon Training". Training at right around 50MPW and hoping to up it to 60 MPW in the next week or two before starting to taper. Recent race time have been: 5K 10/14/08 17:35 20K 09/7/08 1:20:57 25K 09/27/08 1:44:49 30K 10/26/08 2:05:29 I will be running a 1/2 marathon this sunday. I have added my runs for Sep and Oct in the training log.

Forgot to add in training I have ran 5 18-20 mile runs in training and have a 22 and 24 scheduled.

You can make it as simple or complicated as you like. I go for bare bones simplicity and often only need to fill out a single item to log runs. You do not need to bother with time and pace unless you want to. It defaults to the current date so you don't need to change that much of the time if you are logging the current days run. It defaults to the last run type, so you often don't need to change that if most of your runs are Easy. So all you need to actually put in most days is the mileage. Congratulations on your race. Like Ken I'm very impressed that you were able to pick up the pace for the last 6 miles. John

I've officially sent in my registration for Boston on 4/20/09, so I guess I'll throw my hat it the ring though I think I'll probably be closer Fall 2009 since I'll be stuck in back of a lot of people in Boston. Just started my 24-week training for Boston using HADD....

As John said, you can make it as simple or as complicated as you like. The toughest part is entering in prior months if you have nothing that can be imported. For this reason I suggest that you start on Jan 1. On most days it takes me less than 60 seconds to enter my run. On race days or after detailed workouts it might take 5 minutes. Remember also that the log can be backed up to a file on your computer.
