I've used this one - it works and is pretty available/affordable -

I think Seagate makes some of the best drives out there and their warranty tends to back it up. They have 5 year warranties on their drives. A warranty doesn't really help you if the drive crashes but it lets you know that the company stands behind their products.

The suggestion of a NAS with RAID is good as well, I have one but it's probably overkill and more than what most people want to spend but for a computer geek like me, it's worth it.

I would vote for Seagate. I own several of their externals and internals...knock on wood - none have died yet.....they are solid and very quiet. They make a 500gb model called a FreeAgent Pro that has USB 2.0, Firewire, and eSata connections. If your computer has a Firewire port (1394a) this would provide faster file transfer speeds. Newegg.com has this drive listed for $174.99

If you do not have a Firewire connection they make the same drive also 500gb with just a USB 2.0 connection for $132.00.

Is it wrong for me to equate "giggity giggity" with 500GB?

I notice you mentioned computer
s
. If thats the case, you want to be sure that the technology and interface that come with the External drive are supported on all your machines. Also that your OS's support hot swapping. Firewire vs USB - both in read and write tests - Firewire outstrips USB (2.0) in both functions, ideally if your machines support Firewire, thats the way to go. You pay more for a drive that supports both. Also Seagate have acquired Maxtor recently, so after sale service and support may be the same for both brands (i'm not sure). Quagmire, what a hoot - "and have I got a package for you....alllrite" AaronC - I like the look of Raid5 NAS (i may have found a new project) 0110100101110100001000000111001001101111011000110110101101110011
