Good Bad & The Monkey
What software would you recommend I use to copy the DVD onto a backup so that I can keep the original out of his grimy hands?
Free is good.
I'm running somewhere tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful. I can't wait.

I use dvdfab 7 free version to rip. You could then use imgburn to burn the files to a DVD video disc.
You use a Mac? Handbrake I like to make copies to put on my ipod touch for my kiddo to watch in the car on long trips.
for my pc i use either nero (you will need bittorrent to download it) or astroburn lite, which i believe requires daemon tools or a similar img burner.
General Purpose/Cross Platform
VLC should allow you stream record to whatever format you wish with soft or hard subtitles
I use VLC is that it allows me to quickly run through audio/video content at 1.5x to 2.0x normal speed.
Windows
Dvd Decrypter is a good tool for archiving your discs without copy protection, however, it doesn't work on some newer
discs so I resort to two other utilities for extraction.
Vim
I know an 11 year old who destroys dvds.
I have handbrake and VLC now installed, but it is not obvious how I create a disk image from a DVD that I can then burn as a new DVD.
you could try here: http://alternativeto.net/software/imgburn/?platform=mac
Last time I used a MAC to burn, I used mkisofs to create the iso and cdrecord to burn it. There were probably easier ways to do it but I was too lazy to learn another program. The above links seem to be the easiest with the smallest learning curve.
the disc needs to be mounted to create an image of it. download daemon tools and follow the instructions.
Daemon tools has two major limitations:
Thanks tho!

I ran a mile and I liked it, liked it, liked it. dgb2n@yahoo.com
I want to copy the DVD. Store the original and let the kiddos watch the copies on the DVD player. If they kill the copies, no big deal.
Can I just use disk utility to copy a disk image from the DVD and then burn it?
