Shouted encouragement (Read 794 times)

If a complete stranger were to yell something at you while running, what would make you feel good? It was really hot this morning, and I saw a guy running while I was driving to work. I wanted to yell something out to him to encourage him (he looked like he needed it!), but couldn't think of something that didn't sound odd. I also wouldn't want anyone to mistake encouragement for teasing. (Like I would probably do). Thoughts?

Hard to tell what you could say without it maybe coming out sounding like Sarcasm... If I was to go by another runner and they said "Wow, you're hauling!" I woudl take it as a compliment. If it was yelled by someone driving by me in a car or truck I would probably take it as sarcasm and flip them the bird. Sorry, not very helpful but I think in this situation you probably shouldnt say anything just so it is not taken the wrong way - which might discourage him more if he is struggling.

      One day at a time

I think it depends on the specific circumstance. The other day, I ran by a man (probably late 40s) at his mailbox. He gave me a nice smile and said, "Good for you!" It was towards the end of my run when I was tired, and it really DID help me. I DON'T like it when someone yells at me from a car, because I can't understand what they're saying and I assume the worst as you mentioned, nh!

I agree with Teresa...if it's yelled from a car it's hard to understand it especially if they are going fast. A guy on a motorcycle told me to "good job, keep it up" and that made me feel good, but I haven't heard one good thing come from someone in a car so generally I just ignore them.
About 6 weeks ago I was running on a cool but sunny mroning. I was wearing shorts, long sleeve shirt, sun glasses and hat (the hat was covering my grey hair). A car went by and some young ladies cat called me. All I could do was laugh given that I was old enough to be their father and they, I am certain, did not realize this when they drove by and yelled. This was an exception generally, I take most comments from drivers to be sarcastic and insulting. When I do see a runner I want to give encouragement I establish eye contact and either wave or smile. I know that works best for me.

I would really enjoy a nice lady in a car screaming "nice butt"

I second the wave, nod and/or smile. I definitely appreciate those, especially from another runner coming towards me. I often run on a fairly busy highway and have had similar acknowledgements from motorcyclists and drivers the odd time if I make eye contact and I think that's nice. I agree that anything shouted out of a window is more likely to startle me than anything, even if well-intended.

Yesterday another running said "good job guys! Keep it up" to me and my beagle and it made me feel pretty good. I think that it might sounds sarcastic coming from a car though, like someone mentioned.
Hmm, that was what I was afraid of. I definitely wouldn't want anyone to think it was sarcastic! Guess I'll have to stick with driving on the other side of the road to avoid them, hopefully that's encouraging. I know I like it when cars do that.

No man is going to mind a pretty lady cheering on his running. Trust me. You'd have made his whole day.

As an ipod-wearer, I appreciate the thumbs-up and the high-fives. Gentlemen, do not yell things at running ladies from your car. Since so many jerks like to yell "nice cans!" and worse, we assume you're a jerk too. As long as cars don't hit me, I don't really notice what the drivers do.
run run run AHHHHHH run run run
Wave, smile, thumbs up, or something along those lines. And the runner can return the acknowledgement. And I always assume that the cars with the most enthusiastic wavers / thumbs uppers are ones with runners.Smile (or maybe cyclists) But usually the person running can't hear you or understand what you're saying from a moving vehicle, so I wouldn't say anything. And don't stare at them like you're an out-of- town tourist. (My hill roads will soon have lots of tourists, but fortunately the snow is starting to melt from the trails.) I should add that the few times I'm on roads, I'm doing big hills - ones that are popular with runners and cyclists, esp. early in season before mtn trails are runnable.

Wow! I would love to hear someone yell something during my run. Esp. nice cans cuz I know I'll never hear that one!!! Seriously, if I pass other runners on the trail...I try to be encouraging....but from a car??? Not sure about that. CC

We had a woman yell "Girl power" before , that was pretty cool especially since none of us knew her personally. Usually we get a few honks and sometimes not so nice things from men....I would go with the thumbs up.
