Notes
Boston Marathon
The big idea - a very good race. My race plan going in was to run the first half in 1:21-1:22. I ran it in 1:21:05. Then survive and hold on during the second half and in particular the hills from 16-22. I feel like I was able to follow the race plan perfectly.
Aerobically I felt decent the entire race. The limiting factor was more muscle fatigue in the quads. This began around 16 miles and progressively got worse, but not unexpected for a marathon, and in particular one with this much elevation change. Certainly my abbreviated training schedule reduced my strength over the final 6 miles.
The weather was not good. The temperature was ideal - 43 degrees. However strong easterly winds (headwind) of 15 mph and building throughout the race were a definite burden. The rain began at about 15k and gradually increased in intensity for the remainder of the race.
Can I race faster? I believe so. On an easier course, with better weather, and a full training schedule I still believe there are a few minutes still left to give. Will I ever run faster? Time will tell.
