First race back since the stress fracture race on New Year's. I was definitely feeling winded early and it showed on the 2nd and 3rd miles where we had the slight uphills and headwind. I wanted to break and push forward but my body just didn't want to kick it up. I picked up a couple of spots during miles 2 and 3, but otherwise pretty much stayed in the same position for the majority of the race. I kept waiting for Jake and Robert to blow by but looks like they're still getting back into shape too. Took advantage of the last downhill mile but not enough to make the kick with the other runner that I was going back and forth with for most of the race. He kicked around Lowell Street catching the two runners ahead of us and gave a little battle into the finish getting beaten on the kick. I watched from about 20 yards back as I was far out of position by that point.
Overall bittersweet thoughts on the race. A year ago I ran around 5:20 pace at 21:20. This year I was at 5:28 pace at 21:51, not too bad for the lack of running I've been doing. I honestly didn't know if I would even break 23 minutes so I'll take this as a victory. At the same time, I cant help to feel that I left a little bit in the tank (although maybe I didn't feel like that while out there), albeit perhaps only getting down to maybe 21:40 instead of 21:51 - not a big drop.
We'll see what happens at Mill Cities next week, teams should hopefully be announced soon. Felt great to be out there for a race today and great to see the SRR crew.
