3rd Pub Series Race. This was a hot day, race time didnt begin until 12:10 so it was plenty warm from the start. Just waiting around at the starting line in the sun after the mile and a half warmup, I was already dripping. I normally dont do well in the heat, especially at the start of the season and this was no exception.

Went out with a pretty quick first mile and already was gapped by the leaders. Today was the one time I didnt look at my watch the entire race, just went off feel. I wouldnt have guessed that mile one came in this quick.

Mile 2 is where the fatigue began to kick in as well as some of the hills. There are no killer steep hills on this course, but a couple of long gradual hills. To be honest, if I wasnt so hot, I wouldnt have given the hills much thought. I will say this course had the most water stops I had ever seen at a 5K. There must have been at least 5-8 of them, which was actually pretty nice on a day like this. Normally I blow by water during a 5K, but here I probably utilized at least 3/4 of them, at a minimum using the water to pour over my head. It was probably around the halfway point of the race where Pick and some guy in a white singlet (Jon Dudley per the results) blew by me pretty strong and I had nothing in the tank to tag along. On a plus note, I was able to pick off two other runners later on in the mile, with the last mile pretty much having everyone holding their ground.

Mile is known for a little "heartbreak hill" which again wasnt very steep but was a longer climb. I really felt like I was dragging at this point and my splits confirm that I wasnt setting any speed records. I was in survival mode now just trying to maintain placement. The pack ahead was too far to catch and I was far from any PR opportunities. I could see Pick in the distance making a move on Danforth to catch up, only to have Danforth sprint in to hold 2nd place. The last 1/4 mile of the race is a gradual downhill, probably 80 foot drop over the length which if you have any leg turnover left can give a little push into the finish. As I got to the bottom of the hill I put in a kick to hold off potential attackers and closed out with a disappointing 16:43. A terribly far way off from the sub 16:00 goal.

To make matters worse, after sitting down in the shade with a bottle of water for a few minutes after the run, began to experience pain in my right arch, leaving me to limp around walking the rest of the day. Felt fine during the race, only noticed the pain once I got up to start walking around. Not good.

For the pub series, TJ extended his lead with Danforth staying right behind in second. Pick maintained third place with me in the 4th spot.
