Notes

Back to New Bedford for the Grand Prix.

Got stuck back a few rows too many at the start but grinded out to get to a pack where I wanted to be. First mile cruised well but then got stuck in the wind solo and struggled. My nice opening mile was then backed up but 3 miles at 5:40 plus. Had I been healthy the entire time, goal would have been 5:30 the entire race, hills and wind be damned. Instead the revised goal was to be sub 1:14, which I was able to hit but still frustrated that I couldn't go for a PR.

Miles 2-4 were tough. I struggled. It wasn't really a matter of me sitting back as much as it was me just being tired. Maybe I could have grinded harder, who knows.

The good wakeup call was about 7 miles in when Matt Carrara sent breezing by me and I tried to stay close. I was stuck a good 10 yards back for a while but he kept pushing, I assumed, to have a pack to work within once we hit the wind. I tried to keep pace, but even the 5:30's were a challenge and I eventually gave him even more room to pull away. That said, as soon as we turned into the wind, I was able to close the gap. I usually have a good push on hills and into the wind is pretty similar. Matt is a good guy (from my limited interactions) and I usually seem him a bunch at the grand prix. He offered to have us work together taking turns which I gladly accepted and it made the next 1.5 miles go much more easily. That said, by the end, I think we were both cooked.

As we turned away from the wind, a GBTC guy that we picked up started pulling away and I went with him. There was another GBTC and Whirlaway guy ahead that we reeled in over the next mile. I was still sapped of energy and struggled to maintain the spot. That said, I was able to create a little breathing room on the hill but the main pack ahead recollected and started to gap us again. i think if i could have turned those last two slower miles back into 5:30s (even with the hill) I could have reeled them in. I don't know if it was mental weakness or just physical, but just couldn't do it.

As i went down the hill towards the finish and turned onto the final stretch, i made sure i did not give up any ground and pushed hard over the last 100 meters. i didn't catch anyone but i didn't lose ground.

So after missing 4+ weeks in January/February, having the stomach bug last weekend, and just feeling like crap at the end of this week, I'll take this performance. I'm 40 seconds or so off from a PR but this is not a fast course (except the middle stretch which is nice and fast) so i cant complain too much. Tough running today on a cold and windy day. I'm happy given the circumstances but yet frustrated that i couldn't just attack in full strength.
