Pub Series Race #4

It was a hot humid race at 11 AM in the summer. Even worse, the race was long (3.3 rather than 3.1). The race director is notorious for not measuring the courses or at least getting them certified. I don't know how you end up off by 0.2 but it was a bit frustrating.

Race got off quickly with two guys jumping out front and then a chase pack of me, Shawn Wallace, TJ, and Danforth. By the time we hit the 1 mile mark, TJ and Wallace began to create a small gap on me and Danforth. Mile 1 was a slow 5:17 (for everyone, even the leader was probably right above 5:10). The lead pack of 2 lost one of their runners so I was sitting in 5 around this point.

As we rounded the corner onto Cutler, I began to pull back even with Danforth or at least got behind him. As we turned to Highland I ran wide and ran parallel about 2-3 feet to the left. As we climbed towards Cedar I passed him. To my surprise, as we approached Central I began to slowly make ground on TJ until I was able to pull even and pass him at the Central hill. Back at the 1 mile mark I was concerned about how many people would finish between me and TJ putting me further behind in the points but I was able to stay steady and get in front. I began to make up ground on the second place runner.

Before we turned onto Vinal, my watch beeped for the 3 mile mark which I knew meant trouble for the distance of the race as there was still a solid 1/4+ to run. Vinal is a ridiculous downhill, just too steep to really take advantage of during a race. The majority of the race is a long steady but not steep climb and the steep downhill really isn't conducive to making up for the uphill sections. Sure enough, I just couldn't make a move on this section to gain enough ground on the 2nd place runner. I passed Fitz on the hill who assured me I was in the bronze position (I was fearing TJ was on my tail but luckily made a slight gap). I closed out the race in 3rd with a disappointing 17:35 due top the long course. Even if it was 5K, I was probably looking at just under 16:30, so not really in the range I would want to be in at this point.

In talking with Fitz post-race, I pointed out that between this and Corrib, nobody really ran a great race. It was more of a matter of attrition to see who lasted the longest. It would be much more enjoyable if the races were fought around the 15:5X / 16:0X range.
