Notes
Tough race, very humid morning. Mile 1 started with me and Kramer running side by side, which felt like we were going 5:00 flat but instead 5:07 albeit with a couple of minor rolling hills. I only assumed Gardiner was not far behind. Right by the one mile mark, I started to struggle and let Alex jump into the lead. As we turned onto South Street, we were welcomed by a nice headwind. Alex had opened up a 5 second gap which eliminated any drafting chances. Despite most of this mile being a net downhill, I just couldn't take advantage and gap back some pace. As we hit the 3 mile mark, Alex still had a 5-10 second lead and I just felt cooked. I thought I could hear Gardiner on my heels but I just kept plugging away. Mile 3 is a long steady uphill, not steep, but long. I just couldn't bear down and get a good kick going. I didn't realize I was slowing to a 5:30 pace, which was disappointing, would have preferred to keep it around the 5:15 but I was sucking wind. I got a look over my shoulder for the first time turning onto Bradford and saw a healthy lead over Gardiner. I just had nothing to go after Kramer and chase him down. Ended up about 5 seconds back. Should have pushed harder on that hill.
Good news is we finished the race before the rain began.
