Notes

Race to the row 5K. Unfortunately the race was a little long, so equivalent time would be been closer to 16:15 or so. Overall not a bad race, just got a little sloppy during mile 2.

Not many of the usual faces at this race, with the USATF 10 miler being the day before and it also being summer. Pick made a surprise appearance but mentioned he wasn't running much these days, focusing on cross training, probably a good way to stay healthy.

Race got to a quick start with me, a guy in a green singlet, and what looked like a high schooler jumping to a quick start. Quickly me and the green shirt were stride for stride through the first turn and pretty even up to that point. He created a small gap on the "downhill" into the one mile mark. I hit at 5:07, he probably was at 5:06, about 1-2 strides ahead. I was feeling good up to this point.

As we rounded the block to kick off lap two, green shirt started to fade a little and as we approached the water stop, I pulled back up even with him and then ahead as he continued to slow. I hit the 2 mile mark with a 5:22 mile, which I had not realized we had slowed that much. I hadn't checked my watch at all and after the first fast mile, I guess I assumed we were keeping pace. After pacing green shirt, I started picking things up a little. The one benefit of the 180 degree turnarounds is that you can see who is behind you easily and at that top of the hill, I could see I had a good gap on Pick and green shirt.

The next mile was challenging in the sense that we were not running through the walkers/slower joggers. The police and Jesse did a good job trying to clear a path, but there is only so much you can do. I had to dodge the police a couple of times, but the biggest hurdle was making the hard right turn for the little out and back near the river. This required me to cut between a couple of tight groups, the back group pushing a stroller. I felt bad and tried to alert them that I was coming, probably scaring them in the process. Hopefully they understood and I made sure I wasn't clipping them or coming into contact, but I did have to time the cut-over just right. This loop is where the course went long. there is a "cul-de-sac" at the end with a cut-out a little before the far circle. It sounds like the course was supposed to turn at this first cut-out but instead went to the end of the road this morning. Once again the 180 allowed for a view of the field and I could see I had 10-15 second gap on Pick. This late in the race, I knew I could hold the lead and just pressed to the finish. It was fun coming into the finish and break the tape, but disappointed to see the clock. Only later did I realize that the course was long when I looked at my watch (it was too off to be just GPS inaccuracy).

It was a fun crowd and afterparty, would be nice to get more SRR runners participating but a tough time of year. As a bonus, James "raced" in the kids race prior to the 5J. I had practiced with him over the week or so leading up and he was excited to run, albeit wanting to hold my hand the whole way due to the number of people that made him a little scared to be alone.

Overall the race was well organized and lots of volunteer support on the course. Two tweaks: (1) get the turnarounds correct so it is an official 5K - we're a running club so looks silly when we cant get the distance right (2) create a soft barrier (tape on the road) to break up the runners in loop 1 / loop 2 so that the leaders aren't running through a crowd. Now, I did nothing to help or volunteer so it's easy for me to pick things apart without taking responsibility, so i'll just flat out say I think everyone did a good job and it isn't easy to manage a race, these are just suggestions and not meant to take away from what everyone did.
