Notes
This was the 4th race of the 2013 USATF NE Grand Prix series and the second time I've run this race (first was last year also part of the grand prix). The morning actually started off very similar to last year. Cool temps leaving the house, mainly overcast with some fog. By the time the cooldown ended, the fog burned off, sun came through, and temps quickly climbed. Humidity had me hot and pretty sweaty before the race even began.
This isnt a bad course. A few light rollers, but overall cant get much flatter for a 5 miler. Only difficulty was the heat/humdity.
Started off a few rows back at the starting line. Again, probably should have moved at least one row closer but tend to be conservative. Spent the first 1/4 mile weaving and trying to maintain contact with my usual suspects that I find myself near in races. Took about a mile to get myself into a position I was comfortable with, but probably should have moved up a little further.
Was hot out on the course, but didnt really blow up at all. First two miles were right around where I wanted to be (was hoping for sub 27 or about 5:20 per mile) but everyone seemed to slow during miles 3 and 4. Put in a nice little push during mile 5 to at least pull off the PR. Still think my 5 mile and 10K PRs are a little soft and have room for more improvement than the other distances.
Overall felt happy with the performance despite missing my goal by about 30 seconds (first goal was 26:40 / second was just breaking 27:00). Spent the entire race passing other runners, including those who have beat me the past few races. I think only one runner passed me the entire last 4 miles. Think I need to be a little more aggressive at Lone Gull in September and find the right group at the start rather than trying to play catch-up the whole time.
