Notes

Blues at the Crossroads Half-Marathon

Wasn't really feeling it this morning before the race. Ate a few cubes of pineapple, a single pancake without syrup,, and a half of a banana around 6:30am. Hopped on my bike at 6:45 and rode 2.5 miles to the start of the race. Race began at 7:30. It was humid, cold, and windy. I was underdressed. I wish I would've packed a pair of gloves and my half tights, I would've rather raced in that. This was the first cold run I've had in awhile, so I wasn't ready for it.

3 miles in, the headwind started to wear me out, started feeling like I could throw up. I had that feeling until the end. The two guys ahead of me pulled away at 3 miles, by 8 miles, I started reeling them back in. If it hadn't been for my urge to throw up, I feel confident I could've busted out a killer last mile or two for the win. Winner went 1:16:01, so only 19 seconds ahead. I'm ok with it given what I've dealt with over the last couple months, it was a good workout none the less.

Thanks... i need to figure my stomach out. I've never thrown up during a full marathon, so what's the difference? That level of intensity in colder weather? I couldn't even take a water or gel, too cold. Looking back, I've thrown up at Blues 2012, two monumental half marathons, two minis (except i think those two were i was out of shape and overdoing it), and almost on saturday. I think it's the banana, that's always the hardest thing for me to get down in the morning.

could well be, bananas don't digest particularly quickly and obviously the pace is a factor since a marathon is well within a pace that doesn't take too much blood away from your digestive system. Shorter races than halves might not be long enough to cause the problem either so it could well be that the combination of distance and speed of a half requires you to be a little more picky with what goes in the stomach before and during.

Looking back at your faster half marathons, did you ever note what you ate before in your log? What normally worked for you at that distance/intensity? Might just stick to pineapple and maybe oatmeal, but I have a feeling I'd have to wear dark shorts if I ate oatmeal

I think I just went with a slice of toast with butter and honey. I think oatmeal would be a good one too.

Starting to think maybe pineapple is also too acidic, and might be better during a run than before. I used to try bagels, but those are hard to get down too if they're too hard. I think I'll just quit running and drive a race car.

And I would eat an egg. That was all.
