Carmel Marathon

Well I came down with a sore throat on wednesday, so by saturday I was sick. No appetite on friday, threw up a little saturday morning, dealt with it, laced up my shoes and hung on. It was a very windy day, up to 20mph winds. Tried sports beans this time, and i'll probably stick with them from now on, because I can't take gels anymore. I put the beans in a baggy and ate them whenever i wanted, still at specific mile markers near water, so that was nice. It would usually take me about 2 miles to eat the pack, then 2-3 miles of cruising, then back to the beans. I tried 2 gels, one at 10.5, the other at 14.5, they just didn't work, got down maybe 1/4. I was with 2 guys up until around 18 miles, they talked the entire way, and then they dropped and I was in no mans land for the rest of the race. Hamstrings started tightening up around 22 miles, so I did what I could for them to not pull, and came out of that on top. 15th overall and a BQ, which was the goal.

I think if I weren't sick, and even with my low training, I would've been 2:45 today. Overall though, I'm happy with my consistent pace given the circumstances. I do want to mention though, that I had a very rough time after this race. I threw up all of my lunch, and spent the rest of the day on the toilet or in bed because I was crapping blood. About every 15 minutes, for the rest of the day, I was back in the bathroom. This lingered on into sunday until mid-day. Definitely the worst it's ever been, but I think a lot of that has to do with me being sick, not being able to eat much the day before, undertrained, and just running on guts.
