GRAND BLUE MILE

2:31 officially 39rd overall, 33rd male

Mixed feelings. On one hand I split 2:45/2:45 officially and I felt like I pushed most of the race. OTOH the GPS splits show a big slowdown on "laps" 2 & 3. I had fun running the race and felt like I raced hard for 96% of the race

FWIW the goal was to go out controlled for 400, push to maintain pace for 400, destroy myself for 400 and assume the last 400 would take care of itself.

In reality I went out quick but controlled, the watch buzzed and I picked up the effort and started passing people slowly. I soon realized I could be passing them faster (which I did) but clearly they just went out way way too hard as my pace took a dip. the third quarter included 2 turns and the need to navigate through about 10 people which was just annoying and slowed me down. I picked it up at the drumline and started making my move. It felt too hot and I lost 2-3 seconds backing off before I recommitted to the pain and race to the end complete with a huge kick to pass 2 more people.

Tactically, I think I made two mistakes which are related. The road is crowned and the middle was the best area for running. I started out there and quickly drifted left with everyone else. This meant I was running on the slope, on the potholed/uneven area and had to navigate around/through other runners. Next time I'll stay high for much much longer and take advantage of better terrain & less congestion. The other mistake is just not committing to the pain at quarter 2. More realistically, as I looked up from seeing :78 on my watch I realized Jason had passed me... I should have gone with him. Just lock onto his back and roll.
