Notes

--- First time running this tough loop for me since June 3, 2021 and ended up the slowest of the seven times I’ve run this by 32 seconds. I was in much better shape the other times (2020-21) and healthy. Was firing green and red snot rockets the entire run, and coughed so loud and so hard when I finished. Dry-heaved twice (2.07 miles and after the finish) but they may have been more mucus induced. Improved to 6-0-1 hammering the under of times I had to stop on this loop because of stoplights. The over/under was 2.5 today and I made it just under with two stops (1.18 and 3.49). ---

Mile splits: 8:52, 8:29 (17:20), 8:05 (25:25), 8:44 (34:09) and 6:40 (40:49) last 0.79 miles (8:27 pace)

Adjusted splits: 8:27, 8:17, 8:25, 8:22 and 8:20 pace last 0.79 miles

Was still feeling like crap when I woke up. Was tired, too, almost going back to bed for 30 minutes or so. Was nervous about this tough loop with my first time running it since June 3, 2021 when I was in somewhat shape, and longest since running 5.00 miles in Orlando on March 15, 2023. It’s hilly and on the verge of what I call a hilly loop (75 of elevation gain per mile). There’s also a lot of stoplights and a few dangerous parts in terms of traffic which I have fixed I believe. I was 5-0-1 against the spread of stopping at stoplights through the first six times I ran the loop. It was originally 3.5 for the over/under, then dropped to 3 and is now at 2.5 entering today. Really didn’t care how fast I run this loop. Just wanted to live and not die at one of the off ramps and/or stoplights, limit the dry-heaves and then maybe pick it up past El Cajon Blvd. for the final 1.30 miles or so. Did a quick stretch (not good enough). Maybe not enough water either (always). One more blow of my nose and I was out the door. Walked across the street to my normal starting spot on the corner of Stanford Ave. and University Ave., spitting out one big green loogie before I started.

Felt OK when I started in the legs. Not great but not terrible, just hoping for a little better after a planned day off. Meant to stretch last night but forgot. Saw that I was at 2:07 through 0.25 miles. This uphill start went by fairly quick. Crossed La Mesa Blvd. without having to stop. Was slightly in my head breaking up the run into two different categories. One, every 0.40 miles was 1/12 of the way done, and two, breaking it up my the uphills, so four rather difficult hills. Hit the mile in 8:52 (8:27 adjusted).

Made the left on Baltimore Ave. Came up to the light on El Cajon Blvd. and got stuck at 1.18 miles at the stoplight. Picked it up after the stop and was cruising down the Baltimore hill as expected. It looked like I was going to have to stop at Fletcher Parkway and I did for less than a second (not clicking my Garmin so not counting it as a stop) and found an opening to run across. Then the green turn light came on but I was lucky a truck saw me and I waved to him, and sprinted ahead next to a car making a u-turn (before the other car in that lane had to turn). This gave me a little momentum into the uphill. Started OK and felt like I was at the top but then another part came. Hit the 2-mile mark in 17:20 following an 8:29 (8:17 adjusted).

Was happy to get to the top of the hill there, finally, dry-heaving shortly after at 2.07 miles (twice, not normal three times). Then crossed behind a car on Lake Murray Blvd. to get to the other side and avoid the chaos on the bottom of the hill. Started to feel good on the other side with a downhill and then came a small uphill that I kind of forgot about it. I mean I read a previous post to this loop and saw that there was a rolling hill but I forgot about it on the actual run today. That little uphill hurt. Finally recovered after with the downhill down to the I8 as I hit the 3-mile mark in 25:25 following an 8:05 (8:25 adjusted).

Was able to keep running without stopping on the right side past the 8 West exit and onto the bridge across the 8. That hill doesn’t have a sidewalk but I was running in the bike lane. This just buried me. The first half wasn’t bad but just was going so slow toward the top as I crossed back to the left side. Got stuck at the stoplight on El Cajon Blvd. at 3.49 miles. Was welcoming this as I was pretty spent. Felt pretty good right after the stop on the uneven sidewalks on 70th St. but then started to feel it again around 3.75 miles. Was just dreading the last bit on Stanford and I kind of wanted to hammer but kind of knew there would be a dry-heave coming. Hit the 4-mile mark in 34:09 after an 8:44 (8:22 adjusted).

Took the left on Stanford Ave. Tried to pick it up but didn’t have much. A guy turning right off 71st never looked in my direction and I gave him a quick stare. Got down the hill and only had the little uphill on Stanford. Knew in my head how much was left and how much of that was uphill so planned accordingly. Didn’t feel good at all going up the hill. So happy when I got to the top around Harvard. Jogged down and hardly opened it up at all until taking the right toward the finish, maybe the last 0.05 miles or so. Ran the final 0.79 in 6:40 (8:27 pace) (8:20 adjusted).

Altogether it was 4.79 miles in 40:49 (8:32 pace) (8:22 adjusted). It was my slowest of the seven times running it by 32 seconds but I was in much better shape the previous six times running it in 2020 and 2021. It was also my longest run of the year and longest since running five miles on March 15, 2023 in Orlando.

Was pretty exhausted when I stopped, maybe more to do with being sick than anything else as I couldn’t stop coughing. Then I dry-heaved after crossing University while walking to my apartment. This may have been more snot than run but not entirely sure. Need to get healthier.
