--- New out-and-back loop to Bancroft (21:12/20:10) and two laps around the block (5:26/5:18). Legs felt kind of dead despite a day off yesterday and two of the last three days off. Pretty much an easy 6.38 miles. ---

Woke up at 5:15 a.m. to try and beat the heat. Still took an hour to get out, but started running in the dark at 6:18 a.m. Had a good stretch with some Bolen kicks. Right groin was sore all day yesterday and this morning, so was a bit worried about that. Planned on running a new out-and-back loop today out to Bancroft Dr. Would be a little bit hilly, but not too bad. Then planned on adding on two laps around Olive Ave. to get somewhere in the 6.35-to-6.40 range.

Had my usual issues early on with the heavy breathing and awkward running. Left calf and right groin were pretty sore in the beginning, so sore that I contemplated stopping and stretching them both out some more, but I kept going and the pain eventually went away. Was at 2:04 at 0.25 miles and 4:10 at 0.50 miles. Knew pretty early on that I wasn’t feeling it today. Legs were kind of tired, which was disappointing considering yesterday was a planned day off and it was my second day off in three days. I got up University and the La Mesa Blvd. hill OK, just not feeling that great. Hit the first mile in 8:31 (8:00), which was a lot slower than I thought it was going to be. Took a right on Nebo Dr. and then a quick left on Lemon Ave. Was able to make it across Spring St. there with a green light. Got through that part of the village OK, but the hill toward the end of the village hurt. Not as bad as last time I ran this way, but still a bit rough for me. I like that little stretch from the top of that hill to roughly Garfield St. or so hugging the sidewalk on the right side. Ran the second mile in 8:24 (8:11 adjusted). Started to finally feel good a little while after about 2.10 miles or so. Ran up the hill under the 125 bridge and made the turn around at the signal light on Bancroft at 21:12 for 2.53 miles. Still was feeling good on the way back through the third mile of 8:06 (7:57 adjusted). Stopped feeling good shortly after and legs were heavy again. Got stuck at the light on Spring St. at 3.76 miles, which lasted for 43 seconds. Went across, made the quick right on Nebo and left back on La Mesa Blvd. Ran the fourth mile in 8:08 (8:06 adjusted). The loop ended up matching nicely with a loop I run a fair amount of times called Nebo. The fourth-mile mark today matched up almost perfectly with the second mile of that loop. Got down to University and picked it up only because of the gradual downhill finish. Didn’t really open it up or anything, just cruised along. Ran the fifth mile in 7:46 and finished the 5.06 miles in 41:22 (8:11 pace). Out in 21:12 (8:23 pace) and back in 20:10 (7:58 pace).

Kept on going on for two loops around Olive. Thought I was going to feel it like always on Normal, but it was probably too short to feel it. Made the turn on Olive and did OK the rest of the way just keeping up the same pace. Ran the first loop in 5:26. Went a little faster the second time, picking it up when I clicked the 5:26 and more on Olive when I saw a guy walk across the other side on Olive and then start running on the other side of the road. Nah, sir. I broke him pretty quick and finished the second lap in 5:18, so the 1.32 miles in 10:44 (8:08 pace).

Wasn’t really happy with the time or pace, but I didn’t really have it today. Happy to get in 6.38 miles with an average heart rate of just 151 with a max of 160. Still some progress there. At the time I thought that it was an easy run, but now that I’m writing it almost 15 hours later my legs are pretty damn tired. Easy tomorrow.
