Midsummer 5k

Notes

Took first in the midsummer 5k. Led from 800 meters till the finish. Carmin did a good job of reeling me in from about 3k to 4400 meters. I could tell he was coming though and beat him by 10 seconds, from upper lot and on the track.

The course was really hilly, compared to, for instance, the jeremy wright course. i think if i had given the effort i did today on a track that i would have pr-ed for 5k by as much as 10 seconds. i am certainly in fantastic shape without doing that much other than mileage and lifting. I am certainly pleased to have won as well. Winning the midsummer 5k is an accolade that every good bloomington north runner likes to have whether as an alumni or while they are still a student.

I think the guys did a pretty good job today as well. The top seven from north were all between 16 32 and 18 something minutes. if they get an average improvement of 1 minute, a little less from carmin but more from fergus and the other guys running in the 5,6, and 7 range then they can be fantastic. I think that is very realistic too. Most of them are sophomores and my sophomore year i went from 18 32 at the midsummer to 17 28 at regionals. Naturally the women's title went to Kate The Destroyer who ran a solid 19:40 off of what can only be described as "not enough training". I am just worried that she will end up being like kenenisa bekele in the olympics this year, over-raced and under-trained. Its not that the high school kids do way too many races because i think the guys will handle it fine, but you need to have the fitness to cope with that amount of work by the time school starts and i just don't know that top girls did enough during the season.
