Notes

Okay, so this is just crazy. I showed up 10 minutes before the race and decided to run it at about 5:30pm. The race began at 7:00pm. I figured it would be good to get a nice tempo in while I get some miles, etc. I showed up and it was a lot bigger than I thought! I think there were 480 finishers in the 5 mile race. I got to the start line about 30 seconds before the start and I saw all the competition! I'm like, what did and what am I doing?!

So the gun goes off and I hang back but we are still cooking pretty good; faster than I have gone in a very long time. I said to myself, "Self, if I want to be with the leaders I'm going to have to catch up to them NOW"! And so I picked it up slowly and caught up to them. We are on 56th Street heading toward Boy Scout road. We go down a hill and then back up the hill at Franklin Rd. The one mile is at the top of the hill. So I caught up to them right at the 1 mile and then....wait for it....I THREW IN A HUGE SURGE! And I don't know why I did this. I just got this surge of confidence and I had this look on my face and I just wanted to see what people had in them. And as you can see, Mile #2 was my fastest. I really don't know what got into me. I have no clue what I was doing. And then, I'm by myself. And, of course, now that I'm in front, I gotta hold it. So I was scared pissless and just ran as hard as I could. Miles 4 and 5 were slow but I was hammering as hard as I could. I came in 33 seconds ahead of 2nd place, Aaron Harding, a high school running legend! OH, AND I BEAT CHRIS COLGAN, the guy who beat me at Geist!!! Revenge is sweet. Real sweet.

So I met some great folks after the race and we are going to get together and run sometime, including Colgan, who I talked to quite a bit after the race. Then I jogged home and it was great. It was slow but very great to have a victory under my belt. And somehow, I tactically won the race at one mile with a very strange surge at 1 mile. I have never done that or anything like that. I can't believe it worked. I can't believe I shattered that lead pack with one giant swoop. This was a lot of fun. And I mean a LOT of fun!
