Not all times are created equal - there were some great runners in this field and it's very telling that only 5 broke 40:00. Man, what a hard course this was - yikes. Warm up went well and I was up for this one.... Lining up for the race, many around me warned me that this course is very unforgiving as the whole second half is up hill. LESSON LEARNED.
Gun went off and figured I would use the downhill and give myself a chance to hit my target pace. First few were great and I felt comfy. The trail was all paved and shaded - all in all very nice course. Except for the fact the WHOLE second half of this race is uphill. Not one plateau. So, I hit the turn around and immediately realized that the flat sections going out were indeed really downhill. Smack in the face right off.... It took ALL I had to try and maintain a 7:00 pace the whole way back. Very hard finish.
No PR here - but I am very happy with my effort - My body responded and I "had it" tonight. Although the hills just beat me up - I was able to push myself and reel people in. Passed quite a few people on the hills and no one passed me. All in all, just what the doctor ordered after Bob's debacle. My mind was right for this one. Nice night, well run race, good energy and challenging course - what else could I ask for in my VO Max workout. Besides, had dinner at whole foods again - score.
