Drove down to Chesterton to run the Manda's Race with my dad on Halloween morning. Kind of crappy day, rainy and colder, some wind. But not nearly windy as last race in Scherrervile. Some fast looking dudes were there, but I figure what the hell, stay with the top guys and see what happens. Well, about 400M in, I found myself out front. I couldnt hear anyone around me, and like my tradition is, I refuse to take a look back. SO I just tried to keep cruising, stay light on the feet drive the knees, pump my arms. Went through 1 mile in 5:10 according to the guy, liike like around 5:14 on my gps watch, but I didnt split it so idk for sure. Then slight uphill around mile 2, looks like about 100ft total, so not a walk in the park. Around 10:33 according to the splits, but 10:40 on my watch. At this point I was trying to use the crowd cheering to judge where the 2nd place guy was. And all of mile 2 was against traffic, so I saw my dad and tried to get him to give me a hint, but to no avail. I guess I'd just have to run hard to the finish. On one of the last turns, proibably mile 2.5 on, I swear I was hearing footsteps behind me. But of course, I pulled a Sirbek, and was just psyching myself out. There was no one even close to me. I crossed the linein first in about 16:28, second place was almost 90 seconds behind me. I'd like to think with competition I could have gone faster, but I ran a low 16 on my own before, so idk how much of an excuse that it. Oh well. I wont a cool plaque, but no money :(. I guess its good it was for a good cause, but would have been nice to at least pay for my entry.
