BTW - what the heck is a "hard tail" bike - I hope it doesn't mean that I need calluses to ride one Tongue
Jamis Durango 1.0

I saw this locally - the owner of the shop is also a "fit specialist" and says it will probably take 60 - 90 min to adjust the bike to fit me. They would switch out the tires to more of a hybrid type - and I would have the option of trading in the mountain tires, or just keeping them and purchasing the new tires. It's a little more that I wanted to spend, but I think I would rather have a bike that will grow with me.
If you're familiar with this brand/model - I would appreciate opinions - totally clueless here - thanks!

You know, you could buy bike shorts with the chamois and a skirt...or even a wrap-around skirt to put over a pair of bike shorts. Those are pretty useful!

OK, did some lookin' - Jamis is a perfectly fine bike company. They're not as big as Trek or Specialized, but as long as the bike shop stands behind them, you're golden. Oh, and a "hardtail" is a mountain bike with front suspension only - the alternative is a "full suspension" bike with a rear shock absorber, or a nice, simple unsuspended bike.

Are you riding off-road? I got the impression that you're doing your riding on roads that may or may not be paved, but are roads nonetheless. The bike you linked to has off-road features that you don't need - the front suspension fork just makes the bike heavier and slower on the road, will cost money to maintain, and doesn't do you a whit of good. It has low-end disk brakes. They're silly on roads, and they cost more (and are harder to maintain) than regular rim brakes.

The other thing is, being a mountain bike, the Durango has 26" wheels and tires. Once you have "hybrid" tires on it, they'll be pretty small diameter, and won't roll nearly as nicely as larger road wheels.

My suggestion would be this bike:

http://www.jamisbikes.com/usa/bikes/07_bikes/codaw.html

Looks like the web site is messed up, though - click the "specs" link for accurate information.

You save $150, and have something much more suited to your riding. It uses simple rim brakes that'll stop you just fine, has 700c wheels and tires that will roll better on roads (and will be fine on unpaved roads), and it has a suspension seatpost, which will be far more effective for you than a suspension fork.

Yeah - that's right - in fact some will be the cross country ski trails (packed dirt?). This shop will stand behind their product - but you never know if they are trying to move last year's stock, I know the guy told me they were expecting the 2007 version in at $140 more. If I were to go with a Trek - could you suggest a model ? Also - the shop will still fit you - at $70/hr if you don't buy the bike from them. Is that reasonable?
Thanks for checking Smile

Actually, try this link:

http://www.jamisbikes.com/usa/bikes/07_bikes/codaw.html

For some reason, under the "women's specific" model, the detailed description is for a different bike - a super-high-end dual-suspension mountain bike, probably something in the $5000 range! I was a bit suspicious that they'd try to sell you something that unsuited to you; some shops do that to try to move old stock out. It's really lousy practice.

For a Trek, the "fitness" line looks really quite good for you, even better than the Jamis Coda. The base model is this: http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1323013&f=26

I just got this e-mail from a mom of a player on my daughter's soccer team...Just thought I'd share, in case anyone here is interested....If anyone wants the address, just let me know.

Friends and Family,
Would you like to win a bike worth $2000? Are you ready to get fit or continue
exercising outdoors this summer? Did you like bike riding when you were little?
I am writing to tell you about this years cycling event to benefit CAROL For
Heart; an organization that educates women about heart health, the #1 killer of
women. We are holding Girls With Gears, and annual cycling event that caters to
ALL levels of bike riders. There will be a 5, 15, 25 and 40 mile ride that will be lead by local women. I am leading the 25 this year. On Sunday,
April 22nd come to Manderach Park in Limerick and join in the festivities. All
are welcome, including men. We even have a few tweens signed up for the 5 but
be aware that it is a true road ride and traffic will be flowing on the roads.
If you do not own a bike, there are some for rent through Bikesport (see
CarolForHeart.org for rental details) and if you want to try out a new women's
specific road bike some will also be available to take on the ride at the event
through TREK WSD.
Can't make it but want to help?
We need volunteers but the most interesting aspect of our ride is the bike
raffle. I am selling raffle tickets to win one of three TREK bikes worth up to
$2000! (or a gift certificate to Bikesport in that amount, that's enough for
bikes for the whole family!) The tickets are $5 a piece or 3 for $10. If you
want to ride, volunteer or just get further information about the ride go to
CAROL For Heart .org for more information and registration. You can also register the day of at Manderach.
If you would like to buy tickets for the raffle or make a donation just mail me
a check made out to CAROL For Heart and I will mail your ticket stubs. You do
not need to be present to win the bike!

Did, you're like the Yoda of cycling (but with much bigger thighs).

In fact, you can replace "Force" with "Bike" and come up with some deep cycling thoughts...

May The Bike be with you...

The Bike is strong with him. That much is certain.

The Bike is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. And… my sister has it.
