In August 2012 i was experiencing some hip/groin pain and backed off the mileage. Within two months any achiness or pain went away.

Fast forward to this past August, the pain returned. I would have a soreness in my groin area and sometimes on the outside part of my hip. I looked at my notes and mileage from last year and decided to add about 20 miles to August and see what happens. I ran a half in early september also. After the half which was slower than i had expected but still shaved a little time off of last years' time, i decided to run through the discomfort and really work towards a stronger half or full.

One week later i could barely run one mile, so i rested for about a week. Or at least i did minimal running. The pain stayed with me and i had x-rays that didn't do squat. I went through PT for a few weeks which really addressed weakness on one side of my body and we worked on that.

But, the dull pain/achiness never went away. i stopped PT and had an mri orthrogram. The results were a torn labrum. I have to go and see the dr who performs these surgeries and see what the options are and what kind of pain or limitations there will be afterwards.

The good news is that i have been running consistantly from the beginning of October. I had run 155 miles which is close to a pr for me and i am on target to run about the same this month.

I still have a dull achiness but i don't run through heavier pain. I am limited to about 10-13 miles max before i start to feel it and don't want to push it. I have been running 5 days a week compared to the 4 i was running before.

I have seen some experiences from searching, but want to know if anyone else has experienced this.

I want to run at least one more marathon in my running career. I ran one untrained and want to finish in the time i know i can do.

    2013 goals:

    sub 1:30 half

    3:20 marathon on second try

MadisonMandy was just diagnosed with this, and I think was considering surgery.

Hey dallison!  We seem to be in the same boat.  My pain also started summer of 2012 and is still going.  I was just diagnosed with a labral tear and am meeting with a surgeon tomorrow to discuss options. Honestly, I'm feeling pretty lost about the whole process and am not really sure what to do.  I'm only 30.  Far too young to give up running.  Do you why your labrum tore?  Did your doctor talk to you about FAI at all?

We are most definitely in the same boat. I had only received a call from the dr about confirming the tear. The dr who specializes in it has yet to call to set up an appointment to tell me more details about it.

I wish i knew how it tore.

In it for the long run..

My son is having surgery for this and a sports hernia this Friday.  He has trained through the pain and completed Kona Ironman, but he knew he would have to take care of it after Kona.  He's quite competitive and is hoping for a smooth recovery.  There were times in his training that he couldn't run at all, and he had to keep his running mileage much lower than he wanted.

My wife had extensive tears in both of hers from a car accident. This is now a few years back, but at that time it looked like there were only a few surgeons who really specialized in the surgery. We flew out to have one of them perform the operation. Her tears were worse than most, but the recovery was not easy. I know other people had a much easier time.

Well, I am indeed going to have surgery.  No amount of rest will fix this and you're possibly just doing further damage in your joint by continuing to do nothing.  I don't know how old you are, but I would think surgery would also be an option for you.

Is this the cause of what you've been dealing with since the 00's?

That's a damn good question.  The initial injury was a torn hamstring tendon in my other leg.  At that time there really wasn't any pain on my right side (where the labrum is torn).  So it is possible that it is two separate issues and one just segued into the next.

Remember when you hurdled me?  That's probably the cause.

                          Was it worth it?

Welcome.  I've been dealing with mine for the past 18 months or so.  Used to run ultras.

                              What's your plan now?

Got referred to a specialist and will see him after Thanksgiving.  Seems like the choices are either a cortisone shot or surgery.  I have a gut feeling that surgery would be the better way to go but am not going to jump to conclusions until I speak with the specialist.  Either way I will post the outcome in this thread.

18 months or so, yeah sounds about right.  Sheesh.
