My MIL always just asks “oh how did your marathon go?” And tells everyone I’m running a marathon when it’s a 5K
that is also my mom. Whether it's a 5k or an Ironman, it's 'how did the marathon go?'
My boss is so proud of my marathon that he's telling everyone... "show her the picture!" It's a little embarrassing. And also a little sad when I consider that my family doesn't care about it at all beyond telling me I'm nuts. (Which I am, but that's not the point.)
the other day my mom asked me what my "marathon time" was because one of her coworkers who runs asked her. I told her and then the next day she emailed me "I forgot what you said your marathon time was again, six hours and what?" lol
Love those... my mother who is supposed to be a fan of my running (she's the only one who has pics of me running in her house. Even I don't do that) keeps asking me how many kilometers my next marathon? I don't know how to tell her so she understands that marathon is a fixed distance, and other distances are not called a marathon. It just does not sink in.
Ha! I can beat that though. My parents know about my marathons but I haven't talked much about running otherwise. My dad once asked something like "do you also run between marathons, just to keep in shape?"
But this one wins, DaveP!
I had a pretty good one the other day, at a funeral. This woman I hadn't seen in 20 years comes up to me and asks me how I'm doing. She had been talking to my mother a couple of minutes before, so she asks me "So you run marathons?". I smile, and I go "Yeah". And she goes: "Do you do them on a bicycle?" . I froze for a split-second, and said "No, I run them". She went "Oh!"
In other news, I'm developing a callous in between my littlest toe and second to littlest toe. Hurts like a mofo. So I bought both moleskin and some cushiony bandaid type thing that is supposedly mostly waterproof. OR I could just put a ton of Body Glide on my toes. If you've been in this situation, what have you done? I'm all paranoid about "not doing anything new on race day", but I plan to put it on tonight and wear it for the next day or two to see how either feels.
I prefer Aquaphor over Vaseline, especially when it comes time to wash my running clothes. I feel like Vaseline stains my clothes and Aquaphor washes out just fine. During the marathon, I put it all over my blister prone areas and wore wool socks. No blisters or even hot spots. I would also make sure your littlest toenail doesn't have a sharp edge that is irritating the second to littlest toe that could be causing the callous. I would start covering the area now with Aquaphor to help it heal and keep it generously covered through your race. You can buy small tubes that fit in your pocket and make for a great emergency stash during the race if you develop other hot spots or need chapstick, etc.
Yeah the fact that a marathon is a specific distance seems to be one of the toughest concepts for non-runners to absorb. Even more so the fact that it is specifically an organized race, not just the act of running that distance.
That one is pretty bizarre.
Yesterday I was telling a guy I run before work in the morning. He said "You mean actually run -- like on a treadmill?"
Dave
Super B****
Oh, yes, I often run marathons on a bicycle.
chasing the impossible
because i never shut up ... i blog
I lost my rama
I only make half-hearted attempts anymore to try to explain it to non-runners. Sometimes, I just enjoy the chuckle hearing about a 5k marathon.
When I do a LR of 26 miles, DW will say, "you ran a marathon!" I'll say, "no Dear, I only ran 26 miles."
3/17 - NYC Half
4/28 - Big Sur Marathon DNS
6/29 - Forbidden Forest 30 Hour
8/29 - A Race for the Ages - will be given 47 hours

I had once mentioned to someone that I planned to run a half marathon distance to test a particular pair of shoes. A few days later, "How was your half marathon?" And I was so confused because I hadn't run a race. But I guess that one was my fault...
From the Internet.
Man, around here I feel like most people understand that a marathon is a specific thing (even if they're sometimes unsure exactly how many miles it is beyond 20) and that a 5K is not a marathon. My mom is super supportive (traveled with me for the weekend to my first BQ marathon, even!), husband is mildly supportive in that he knows how important it is to me even though he doesn't get it.
Sorry to one-up, DaveP! Lol. Fwiw I wouldn't go out for the extra 1.5 if I were in your shoes.
Then of course there's the whole explaining how getting in to Boston works.
I have a FB friend who lives in Chicago and is a little bit of a runner but not super serious. I had made a few comments on the Boston FB page. They must have shown up on her news feed, and she must have started reading some of the comments about cutoff times. She posts "Chicago has an OPEN marathon." OK then.
So I've already started thinking about the marathon I'm going to have to run next fall... and I have so few options that I fear I may end up doing this one again. Can you tell, from this photo around mile 22, why I might not be thrilled at the prospect?
Why on earth would you have to run a marathon next fall? You have your BQ
Is that the sag wagon chasing you?

Tell her that you have Guaranteed Entry
Because last time I got my BQ and then didn't run another marathon for 18 months, which I don't think helped me run said marathon. (I would have done one this fall even if I did make the cutoff for 2019 for just that reason.)
No, it's my lead escort vehicle (honestly, I have no idea, I don't think I even noticed it at the time)
