    Just further info:

In What Years Was There a Good Match Between the Vaccine and the Circulating Viruses?

In recent years the match between the vaccine viruses and those identified during the flu season has usually been good. In 18 of the last 22 U.S. influenza seasons the viruses in the influenza vaccine have been well matched to the predominant circulating viruses. Since 1990, there has only been one season (1997-98) when there was very low cross-reaction between the viruses in the seasonal vaccine and the predominant circulating virus, and three seasons (1992-93, 2003-04, and 2007-08) when there was low cross-reaction.

18 out of 22 well matched is a pretty good record.

A minor quibble for the OP:  It would have been more appropriate to post this under Health and Nutrition.

Nay.  Neither of us gets the shots, this year DH got the flu.  I quarantined  myself in the house, pushed his food under the door, and washed my hands until the skin fell off.  I didn't get sick.  Other than the bank and the grocery store, I am rarely around other people, and even more rarely around children.  I would likely get the shot if I was subject to the general public more.

        From the Internet.

I, too, get it very conveniently and for free every year, so it's a no-brainer for me. I'm at a large university and have a preschooler who's in contact with a bunch of other little germ-mongerers 5 days a week, I cover whatever bases I can to avoid getting sick.

                This won't end well.

Given the previous response about lack of vaccines or shots as a family, I'm going to bet the over.  Whatever the over/under number happens to be.

I'm not going to debate interwebz strangers on my personal decisions, so numerous pages won't be from me. And I do believe I stated that if OP wanted to get one, experts say it isn't too late. So I also do not try to interject my beliefs or opinions onto other's personal choices either.

But yes, these sorts of questions often do not end well on forums.

This will not end well, just like the last thread we opened about it.

I predict three pages of opinions, and three pages saying this won't end well.

Another prediction would involve whether this thread will go meta or not.

(meta = someone starts a "thread about the thread")

                        PS, get a flu shot.

PPS, if I get the flu right now, minimally I'm in the hospital and there's a reasonable chance it'll kill me dead.  These threads weird me out.

Gotta chime in here since I just got over the flu.

I've only had the flu twice in my life & those were the two most miserable times of my life.  Too many people have a bad cold and just call it the flu.  It's NOT the same thing!  If you've ever truly had a version of flu, you'll happily do anything to prevent it, including getting your flu shot.

As a kindergarten teacher, I almost always get my flu shot.  This year I forgot the day my work gives them out & just neglected getting one from my doctor.  NEVER AGAIN!

The only one in my family who got a flu shot was my daughter - and even with two weeks of my dh and I coughing all over her, she stayed healthy.  Of my students, the ones who have stayed healthy are the ones who got their flu shots this year.  The parents of the kids who've been sick are coming to me and telling me how horrible they feel for not getting their kids their fu shots.

Of course, to each his own.  But in my opinion it's just silly to avoid doing something that can potentially prevent 2 weeks of misery.  And if you're around young infants or the elderly, PLEASE get your flu shot to help protect them, if not yourself.

One good thing about being around germy, dirty kids on a daily basis.....Your immune system tends to be better than those of persons who tend to stay away from said kids.  I'm around a germy kid fairly frequently and don't get sick.  DH takes one look at said kid and is sick for days. But then again, I have allergies year round and wouldn't know if something else was going on anyway. Big grin

Got it. It was offered free at work awhile ago.
