You mean other than posting a thread about it, a whole bunch of posts about it, and posting photos of yourself?  Other than that you don't care about it.

You didn't have to say it twice. I heard you the first time, you know. Big grin

Is that scrawny or am I still a bit muscular? Or both? Undecided I think that for BMI to say that I'm way underweight is a bit exaggerated...

Forgive my disheveled hair and my un-cooperating left arm.lol... It was very early in the morning. And I ran 16 miles late last night and so was a little tired when I took the picture. Big grin

Thank you! This will go in my Lilly file. Big grin Fine, mighty fine!

        Lily,

Read my lip: you look GREAT!

        -------------------------------

Ans to the OP: Ideally, IF it's easy to lose weight, I'd like to lose some to get to BMI~19.

BUT I think this is very individual, some may be at their best around BMI=21 w/o losing strength, some can manage quite well at BMI=19 or lower but quite a few people may feel less energetic at that range. Besides, it may be hard to maintain at optimal racing weight.

Personally, I had my best fitness level when my BMI was ~19 quite a while ago. Wasn't running then. But I am only 5'2 and I could spike playing in men's volleyball court (the net). And when I say spike I mean spike with heavy punch (I have pretty good coordination to put power in action). That's how high I could jump. And I also could throw a softball from outfield to infield with good precision. I don't have the same strength now and can jump only a little over a foot vertically. But, now it seems improbable for me to do all this even if my BMI is to go down to 19 and it is not likely for my BMI to get down that low w/o seriously watching my diet. So realistically, I'll take BMI=20 (I'm usually ~20-21, but recently it's been closer to 21 than 20. Not good.)

For me, the magic lower number for me seems to be 115. I have been as low as 112 and my sternum really starts to look bad & boney, old lady looking. But the weird thing is that I am built very wide in the waist/belly area so it doesn't matter how small I have gotten, I always have a pooch and my waist measures in the "normal" range even though my weight puts me under and I look thin. So my waist is not ever inporportion to the rest of me. When I weighed 185, my waist was a 44". Now I weigh 115 and I am a 32.

I allow myself to get as high as 120 now or as low as 114. I try to stay pretty steady. I don't want to look like death. Being faster isn't that important to me at this point. I don't think any type of sport has ever been more important than food has been(maybe that is my issue?!)

Not that you do, lily, you look fab.

What are thoughts on BMI vs. Body Fat %?

I started running about a month into my weight loss journey last May and working out the last part of October last year after losing 50lbs. I am pretty much the same weight now as I was then, between 190-195 and 6'1".

My first weigh in at that time in October I was 191lbs and 18% Body Fat and I think the BMI was around 24.

Did a weigh in yesterday with my personal trainer. I have been working out religiously 3-4 days a week and running 4-5 days a week since October. My body fat number is down to 9.7% and BMI is 22. The trainer said he really doesn't consider the BMI # for athletes but does take stock in the Body Fat %. I thought it was pretty cool for him to put me in the athlete category......never was when I was younger but running and taking care of my body seems to have put me there. no complaints.

                      Thoughts?

                        Thoughts? You're an attention whore!

Very impressive transformation, especially at your, ahem, advanced age (1 year older than me). There are plenty of articles (as well as forum threads) discussing how BMI is BS. I hope they are right, since mine is borderline overweight (24.4); I'd have to lose 20 lb to get to the midpoint of normal. And although plenty of people on this forum seem to be my height & 20 lb less, I don't see how I personally could do that. (Maybe someday I'll post a photo of what a 24.4 BMI looks like, when I'm in an attention-whory mood).

At age 40 my most intense activity was mowing the lawn, then I decided to get in shape & eat healthy. My weight has not changed much since then, maybe 5 lb down, but god help me if my body fat % hasn't gone down substantially. Never had it measured, would be more interesting to me if I had a "before" number for comparison.

Obviously one number can never tell you everything about a person. Certainly BF% is a factor, as muscle weighs more than fat. BMI I think is used mainly as a preliminary screening tool, and for things like insurance company statistics.

Hell yeah i am.  Guess I should've posted in that whorish thread from last week.

same for me with lawn mowing being my most intense activity for many years.........other activities included lots of all you can eat buffets and an occasional bike ride.

I thought it was ho!  Damn, now I'm confused.

BMI is only a guideline.  And %BF can also be off depending on how it's measured.   So I don't take a whole lot of stock in either, but the problem is we've grown so accustomed to seeing a society that's overweight, I thnk we've forgotten what a healthy weight looks like and need all sorts of numbers to tell us.

That said, a BF% of ~10% is pretty awesome, Spark!
