Garmin's customer service and their products are great, but yes, their manuals are weak. It's best to just figure it out as you go along.

99.9% of people do not crack open manuals beyond "how to put the batteries in" and basic setup stuff. Lots of companies stopped writing detailed user manuals.

Well, generally speaking there is no limit to how badly things can be done, so I would lean towards saying yes, it is possible.
