Foot pod and pace help, pretty please! (Read 195 times)

    I asked about this on RW awhile ago, but I'm not sure I understand how this footpod works.   I am going to use it to do speed work at our 443m track here.  I am testing it out with my watch right now.  Is the only field that works with the footpod on (no satellite) to give me any idea of pace the total time field?  So there is no other way to figure out my average moving pace other than doing some serious math while I'm in the middle of my run, is that right? 

     

    The run I'm going to do this week is a tempo run, 4 out of 11 miles.  If I have to try to hit my pace the "old fashioned" way, what is the best way to do this?  Should I know what time I am targeting for each 443 m lap and hit the lap button each time I do 1 lap and do that 14.6xs for the 4 mile tempo portion of my run? 

     

    Ok, I used the footpod and when I put it into Garmin Connect, all it told me was my total time.  Shouldn't it at least give me my average pace on there?

     

    Any help would be appreciated.   Thanks!

          Well, I think my watch wasn't detecting the foot pod previously, b/c now it works and it is telling me average overall pace and average lap pace + distance.  WOOT!

            I always forget to switch my footpod over as I rotate shoes in the morning. I always miss seeing the difference in cadence between paces. When I am going slow, my pace is between 87-90 for cadence(so double that for steps per minute) but at my 5k pace, I get over 100! Now if I could just get longer legs, I'd be in business!

              Oooohhhhh....fancy! I don't know what my cadence is! I guess I will find out! This thing is pretty neat, though, if it works like I think it will at the track!

                Which Garmin device do you have?  As long as you have GPS turned on it will use GPS for pace.  You can select to use the footpod as the source for instant pace measurements though; at least you can on the 910xt.  I never use instant pace though.  I only find the foodpod of any value for distance measurements when using it on the treadmill.  And personally, I think the treadmill is more accurate.

                 

                I do use the footpod to keep track of cadence though.  I downloaded music from PODRunner.com at various beats per minute and run to that music.  For 5k interval repeats I use music at 180 bpm (90 strides per minute).  For MP runs I am using 171, and 173 for 1/2 MP runs.  I'm gradually trying to increase the cadence on these MP and 1/2 MP runs.  I find it definitely helps me when running to a steady beat.  I seem to do less speeding up and slowing down which tires me less.

                  This thread makes my head hurt.  I prefer the left foot, right foot, moving in a forwardly direction method.  Works every time.

                    I have the 405.  I can't use the GPS b/c I am running in an indoor track, hence the need for the footpod.  I calibrated it and it supposedly is pretty accurate.
