I maintain that maybe with the exception of Belgium, we make better beer (& a wider variety of it) in the US than anywhere else in the world. DW is from Oregon so I have been there a number of times. They are pretty proud of their beer tradition, and refer to their state as "Beervana". They were pretty much the cradle of the American craft beer movement. I first went out there >20 years ago before I had ever heard of a microbrewery or a brewpub. They were all over the place there, and I was in heaven. (Similar story with coffee, by the way.) Fortunately it spread, and you can find good beer in most places these days; just a bit more effort in some places than others. When traveling anywhere on business, I generally look for a brewery if possible, or pick the restaurant based on their beer list. And with this list I no longer have to apologize for being biased when I talk about how great Michigan beers are. Some really outstanding breweries here; Founders is one of the best in the country. I have decided for me, life is too short (and calories too valuable) to drink bad beer. If only a macrobrew is available, I don't drink any. Incidentally, whenever I do have a sip of one, I have vivid flashbacks to high school.

I agree completely. I met a guy from Germany a couple of years ago and he said the variety of beer available in the United States was unparalleled. I'm also with you about life being to short to drink shitty beer. I think I may drink a macrobrew once or twice a year and that's typically to remind myself of just how flavorless it is.

On ratebeer.com's top 50 list , the bottled version of #47 is brewed in the Montreal area, and the BrewPub that brewed it originally (and still does) is about a 10 minutes walk from my home. The only problem with that BrewPub is it's almost always full.

I did not even know Florida had beers.

Yeah I'm pretty surprised it was rated that high at #17, just behind NC (which has a large number of very good breweries), and just ahead of Delaware (which is tiny but has Dogfish Head). I have had a hell of a time finding decent beer down there, at least in SoFla. I am often "forced" to drink margaritas or something. Maybe other parts of the state are better; the only noteworthy brewery I am aware of is Cigar City in Tampa.

I heard somewhere that Stone is opening a brewery in Germany. There are many American beers that Germans love, as funny as that sounds.
I can find beer down here, especially good crafted beer (with have both Total Wine and ABC something or other so the variety has gone up. Even Publix has a lot of good brands. However, I have never seen anything from Florida. Not even to make it # 50 (as our current placement for worse governor - two years in a row). Or # 1 for mortgage and medicare fraud, almost every year. We excel...at the wrong thing.

This is a great article, thanks for sharing! I'm surprised Wisconsin is not higher....I guess it is because many of their beers are only sold in state. I traveled to Madison two summers ago to visit a friend who had moved their and we drank amazing local beer the whole time.
Yeah, we have it pretty rough in this city. I can even ride my bike to New Glarus Brewing Co. too. Poor me!
Running is dumb.
From the Internet.
I'm frankly offended by Rhode Island's place on the list. Tons of great little craft breweries and the author can only mention Narragansett? Rude.

Looks like I need to visit Oregon
Maybe Zel will put us up while we tour all the OR breweries.
Living in what some would call micro beer heaven (ranked #4), I have been told by friends and coworkers that I should be ashamed of my micro brew acumen. lol There is honestly not enough time or care in the world for me to worry over any of it though.
While they can seemingly name a million different brands and types of micro beers, I can only list Dog Fish Head 60 or 90 IPA (never tried the 120), Bells Two Hearted Ale, Rochester Mills Red Ale and Amber Ale, New Belgium Snapshot and Fat tire and probably one or two others as my faves.
That said, if I come to your house and all you have is Miller Lite guess what? Pass me that bitch, in fact pass me two to get started. lol
Dos Equis Amber, Corona, Becks, Sam Adams are all just fine with me. When I go to Tigers' games, I walk until I find the one of two stands that have Labatt Blue on tap (which has been called brown pee by one friend) and order two of them bitches.
I guess I am just able to adjust my tastes and expectations according to where I happen to be.
In any event, I am not sure how high of a horse you ride on to call another mans beer brown pee (like seriously, why do you fuckin care what the fuck *I* drink?!) but I take it all in stride like anything else.
Our governor actually beat Mississippi two years. Yay?
