Spitting While Running... (Read 201 times)

Better I Leave

I'm not sure if this is a controversial subject, but here goes...

I remained with my pace group during my last HM, right? OK...Well, one of the runners in front of me had a habit of, quite frequently, spitting. I don't spit. I find it vulgar and very unsanitary. I'm not a clean freak by any stretch, but I have given people more than a ration of shit if I caught them spitting in front of me (you don't want to hear what I did to one of my son's friends when I found out that it was he who left a spitwad on my front porch one time...it wasn't pretty.)

Anyway, she was spitting...so much! Don't get me wrong, even I have rinsed my mouth at a aid station....once...but to be continuously spitting for the duration of the run...really? Is this a rant? I suppose it is, but I find it rude behavior. I wouldn't dream of spitting in front of someone, regardless of whether I knew they would be stepping in it or not.

This was actually the first time in the few races (5 races not counting my Tough Mudders) I've ran where I saw this on such a frequent basis. Thoughts?

If I am chatting while running, it makes me have to spit.  Trail runners don't seem to mind.

      Running is dumb.

      Are we there, yet?

Do you need special music on your iPad for that? You know, a spit tune.

My Tuesday night running buddy(a 23 yo female) has a spitting habit while we run. But I have a snot rocket habit, so we even each other out grossness wise. As long as we don't cross paths with our expectorating, it's all good. We are outside after all and it's better than wearing it, me thinks.

I grew up with brothers though and she grew up in a family with 6 kids. I think at some point you just feel lucky to make it out alive. Spit and boogers is small potatoes.

I would say it is rude if I was in an eatery or church perhaps. But 4 miles from nowhere, nah.

Yeah, I figured it was just "my shit", so it's all good. It's just something I don't do. Oddly enough, it was never anything I was "taught", just something I adopted..and believe me, I grew up in the barrio surrounded by lowriders and "spitting" was a frequent habit. Go figure, yeah?

            Sloooow.

Spitting is a huge pet peeve of mine. I'm always scared that I will get spat on, or step in spit, during a race. I think I'd throw up. Thankfully I've never seen anyone spitting (during a race) Dead

                I spit.

And I do a very good job of checking my 3, 6 and 9 o'clock to make sure I don't spit on or near someone.

                Sometimes I blow snot rockets.

                I pass gas...

I have yet to shit myself. So there is that...

A lady running in front of me turned and nearly spit on me during a half marathon.  She turned, spit, then realized I was right there, looked mortified and apologized.

I don't spit, but don't mind it from others... but if you're running in a group, make sure you look behind you first!

I'm a spitter but do it sparingly. Maybe it is due to being congested as I am constantly blowing my nose but on paper towels. I am a germaphobe except when it comes to running. Plenty of people I have run with do things that would bother me elsewhere.

I spit out huge flying wads of spittle that are almost ballet-like as they fly through the air. Seriously, they are things of beauty. I get a lot of height and great arcs on most of them.

But yeah, it's a bad habit. I realize that i use spitting not only as a way to clear my throat but also as a way to get extra energy. It's weird, but the act of spitting actually makes me feel stronger.

I probably would not spit if someone were running directly behind me. Definitely would not pass gas. Not really a surprise that slymoon does though. Guess we're going to have to ask Dan The CPA about that. Big grin

If you race much you're going to see a lot of spit.  Goes with the activity.  You'll see lots worse too.  Likely, after a while, seeing spit will will not in any way bother you compared to what else you might.  I don't generally have much saliva to spit during a race as my body tries to retain whatever it can.  However, my nose tends to let loose so I get rid of that.  I'm certainly not going to swallow it.  I try not hit anyone and try to check for passing scooters before I launch one out the window of my car.  Other than that...

If you're in a race and find yourself behind someone spitting then maybe find a different position in the pack?

Listen to me people: when we are running together (especially in a race), NO spitting, no grunting, no humming/singing songs, no heavy breathing, no talking to me. Don't even look at me. Understood? Big grin
