Florence, OR Turkey Trot and Econo hugs (Read 468 times)

Mariposai

Thanks to a chat with Econo I found out that there was a 5k race scheduled for today in the town where I am spending a week with my in-laws. Never to pass up a local race I decided to show up at the starting line this morning even when racing was the last thing on my list to do. Meeting up with the lovely Econo was of course a huge motivator to not miss this race. As you all well know this has been a rather hectic and emotional week for me. That added to the fact that I have run 47 miles since Saturday with a 17 miler just three days prior to the race made it impossible for me to run this race for best time, but for the fun of it. I bid my FIL a hug and told him I was going to go run for both of us. He told me in his rather weak voice...go get them girl. The race starts and ends on the board walk in downtown Florence. A small number of runners showed up ready to use up a few thanksgiving calories. A lovely and rather romantic route made running this race worthwhile. My finish time was 26:31 for an average 8:34 pace. Not bad for my butterfly wings. The highlight of this race was having a chance to spend some time with our lovely Econo and getting to meet mamaEcono, sisterEcono and her son. What a lovely family. What inspiring athletes they all are.

Hugs to you, your family, Econo, and her family too! Nice that you got to meet up with her and do a local race. Waiting for the pics when you get home.

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

How fun to get this nice break during your time with your FIL and family. Isn't Econo great? You've sure had a lot of running this week for all the rest of the things you're doing. I hope you're getting some rest, dear friend.

It sounds like it has really been an up and down visit out there, glad you had a chance to have a fun race, It's great that you had a chance to meet the econo clan, I have only met a couple of them, I am sure they are all really special. Dave
Mariposai, it's really neat you got to do this race. Even though your trip is a labor of love, a brief break from the stress was good, especially since you got to meet Econ and family and ran a nice race. Congratulations. My thoughts continue to be with you and your family. TomS
Thanks for posting this race report featuring two of my very favorite runners. I'm so glad you were able to take a break from all that is weighing on your heart this week.

Nice time with family and friends. Thanks for sharing.

Mariposai, it is good to hear you have been logging a lot of miles this week, and being such a comfort to your extended family at the same time. I am very jealous that you got to meet up with the legendary Econo and her clan! Great 5K time too, after all that running.

me too about seeing econo. It's been every year since '04 in the SM and we're still hoping this year too. However, you don't say if you saw her in the race. Except for the Christmas Marathon with the long out-and-back, I've missed seeing her in all of mine too!Smile

tetsujin, only one other lucky guy has received a mid-marathon hug! I will miss the Seattle half this year -- wah! But I had a lot of work to do, so decided not to make the long trip up. (((tetsujin))) mariposai, wouldn't it be great if we could go on one of those 17-milers together in Florence? I need your eyes to make me realize how pretty it is -- and it really is pretty... (To me, Florence is just where Econo elders go to retire!) Smile

How wonderful, Mariposai, amid this emotional time you were able to have some joy. Nice racing, btw, and great meeting up with Econo, too.... Smile

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

Hi Mariposai. Sorry to hear about your (was he your stepdad). My sympathies. Will you be to the Oregon coast again? We have the Rhody Run on May 16th. It is a little bigger race of long standing. They have a web site. There is a 5K and a 10 K. I hope Econo will be here. I am brand new to Running Ahead, and you are my first posting. I hope this group welcomes oldiwannabes. Thanks for the kind words about our family. We enjoyed meeting with you, and it was really nice of you to come back after your swift time, and help escort The Mama to the finish line. Very classy of you. Since then I went with Econo to Napa, and did their 5K while Econo did the Marathon. The whole experience was very exciting, and if you haven't done Napa, try to. Smile Hope to see you again.
