SCHEDULE 2016--
The pain that hurts the worse is the imagined pain. One of the most difficult arts of racing is learning to ignore the imagined pain and just live with the present pain (which is always bearable.) - Jeff

Hi Ilene, Here's one to add: 09/18 Fortunate One - North Face Challenge-Madison Half, Ice Age Trail, WI You'll be in Maui that day, having a blast, I'm sure.
I'll try not to be smug when I think of you on something called 'The Ice Age trail' when I am lounging on a tropical beach.
Marathon Maniac #957
Ilene - could you add this in for me?
09/24 HollyS - Germantown 50K Trail Run, Germantown, OH
Thanks!
Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."
Thanks Ilene!
Filling out the fall racing season....

If you go to Little Beach (SW coast), don't take your camera out. My DW was chastised when she tried to take some pics of me body surfing there last winter.
Why? Is it a nude beach?

dear ilene,
.
maybe it's the same one.
.8/24 tetsujin - Hiratsuka Marathon (Japan - barefoot).
A. MARATHON FOR A FRIEND.Wasn’t sure it would fit in during my current Japan trip but it does and’ll be a first time for a non-holiday, mid-week marathon. It’s some 20 laps around the Hiratsuka Athletic Park south of Tokyo in memory of the chair of the Japan 100-Marathon Joyful Running Club who passed away in April. .Instead of dedicating one of their bimonthly Hiratsuka Marathons to him, they wanted to make it be all his and his alone, ergo the odd Wednesday running. With recent temperatures and humidities in the nineties, it was a appropriate choice. .In somewhat similar conditions in July 2009, his late start and my early start had him catching up to me just as I was getting disoriented enough to realize it a couple of miles from the top of the final 10 mile ascent in the Hakone Pass Marathon in July 2009. He shared some Poccari Sweat and made sure I crested with him before he pulled away for the final three-mile descent to the finish at Lake Hikone, I’ll miss the ganbare’s he used to give when he was lapping me on the Hiratsuka course too..B. EARTHQUAKE IMPACT ON MANY FRIENDS.Speaking of ganbare’s, I saw hundreds of “Ganbarimashou Japan,” “Ganbarimashou Fukushima,” “Ganbarimashou Sendai,” Ganbarimashou ________,” etc. signs at towns and cities, train stations, on the bullet and other trains, taxis, store fronts, memorials, etc. in and on the way to the earthquake areas where I’d spent nearly two weeks in January.
About an hour after I got off the bullet train at Sendai and was on a bus to my coastal destination, my cell phone (which was on silent mode) started buzzing and beeping with “Earthquake,” “Earthquake.” The bus came to a sudden stop until the all clear for associated tsunamis was given about ten minutes later.. .As for the tsunami that did happen on March 11, 2011 though, I thought seeing the streets rippling like a river during an earthquake in 1957 that had stripped trees to 1,700 along an inlet only seventy miles away, and going to Anchorage less than two weeks after theirs would have prepared me for what I was going to see over here. Not at all. .The 30-40 foot primary tsunami surge has soured several square miles of various residential areas to the bare ground. It ripped away windows, doors and the inside contents of more sturdily-constructed commercial structures leaving ghostly skeleton buildings in its wake. .With blue, green, yellow and other colored cranes and power shovels here-and-there picking up shattered pieces of wood, doors, roof tiles, broken window frames, refrigerators, muddy and crumpled cars, it looked like miles and miles of the world’s largest garbage dump landfill. .There’s at least a thousand cars piled 30-40 deep in one dumping ground. Clothing and footwear from the winter are stuck in mud and hardened dirt everywhere. .In addition to the earthquake and the tsunami, there’s substantial coastal subsidence that’s permanently eliminated miles and miles of coastal railway lines and connecting highways. In the absence of any electricity city traffic signals, police from all over the county are directing traffic at every intersection. It seems like the aftermath of a riot, . . and I guess it is..Though unaccounted for for up to a week afterwards, my friend from back to 1978 and more recent friends and contacts all got to one of the several nearby hill sides or high enough into buildings far enough away from the sea that the destructive power of the tsunami had subsided enough just to be a 20-30 foot tidal-like surge of rising water. It was still powerful enough to float some two story home a couple of miles away. They’re gone now but photos at the time show at least two buses on top of four story buildings in two of the cities. http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2011/04/japan-earthquake-one-month-later/100041/
.My next best friend, with wife and son and some neighbors, were on the roof of nearby three story parking garage about two kilometers from the sea for five days before forging through the still-waist high freezing water to see if their house was still there. It was but everything on the first floor had been washed out. He had emergency water and food so they stayed on the second floor for another week before first floor clean-up could begin. .No one isn’t missing someone as time and thoughts and energy are consumed with checking here and there, digging into debris along the beaches, estuaries and rivers plus into accumulated mounds of flotsam in the remnants of towns and roadways that used to be. .It’s like seeing the all combining aftermath of an earthquake, riot, hurricane, tornado, typhoon and war all at once. It’s still daily news and daily conversation and has changed everyone. A part of my heart will never be the same again either.

Hi Tet,
Thanks for that 'eye-witness' detailed report on the tsunami and what it left behind (and took away). That is just too sad, scary, amazing, awful. I'm sure that nothing I could imagine would be half as bad as it would have been (and continues to be) to live through that.

Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.
