Marathon Maniac #957

For those of you who are new, this is the 40/40 thread, for people who are over 40 years old who run or aspire to run 40 miles/week. We give Free Passes to those who come really close or try really hard... Here's the tally up from last week. Let me know if I made any errors.
    WhoMilesCommentary

    Mainerunnah43.4 Battling brutal H&H

    Breger135.2 Hey, that’s pretty close
Twocat Free Pass Marathon recovery time
WaltRB Free Pass Putting in some race-volunteering and quality time with the girls – well spent indeed...
I won't even attempt a schedule for myself this week. (sigh) This Friday it will be 1 month since I did this, and I can barely run a mile right now. (Oh I probably could if I took enough ibu, but that's defeating the purpose.) So many times I have had sore muscles and still been able to run through it, so I just didn't want to believe that I couldn't do that this time, too. This being my first real running injury, I didn't really know the difference, and so kept trying to run. Ah well, live and learn. This too will pass... Smile

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

Hang in there Holly. But thanks for keeping this going for the rest of us. Still trying the recovery run vs. rest day... we'll see how it goes this week. Not sure if I'll keep it up all thru August....

Holly, I know how hard it is to be patient when you can't run, but you need this time away from running to heal properly. Thanks for continuing to do this thread even when you can't run yourself. My plan is for 46.3 again this week: Mon 4 mile recovery run Done Tues 6 miles easy w/8x100m strides over last mile Done Wed 4 mile recovery run Done Thursday 8.15 miles easy Done Friday 8.15 miles easy Done Sat 12 mile LR Done Sun 4 mile recovery run Done Total 46.3

((((((Holly))))))) Take the time you need. And thanks for keeping the thread going. I don't know what the weather is like where you are, but here in the NE it's been pretty steamy- a good time to miss. M--8.5, 1:17.14 in the HHH, 9:05 m/m, 137/167 T-- W--rained out midweek run Th- F-- S--8.2 trail miles, 1:17, 9:24, 144/176 S--9.87, 1:30:13, new route, hillier than I thought so I cut short my long run, 151/185 26.5--I'm feelin' the summertime lull....more next week, promise....
Heading into August and trying to hold it together as the training schedule gets more intense. This week is a step back week and then we go back up into 70s and hit 80 soon. Thanks again Holly…this helps keep me on track. Now for you my dear friend...I am sending you strength and hugs.....I have had my share of injuries even to the point of my college coach putting my foot in a cast so I wouldn't come back too quickly. It stinks, it sucks, but rest is really best. You are one of the toughest women I know----this requires that toughness. 7/21----Off---travel to NJ/Philly 7/22----9-10 miles with embedded 5k/weekly prediction race (7:20 pace)5 mile dyno/fartlek outrunning the t-storms/bagged the prediction race/workout 7/23----10-12 miles easy and then travel to NC--15 miles at 8:21 pace 7/24----8 miles in Boone, NC----8 miles 9:07 pace 7/25----Off/travel home and then to a wedding on the Cape---5.2 to conquer Bodenheimer Hill 7/26----10 with 4 at MP----6 with 5 at 7:30 pace 7/27----20---9:00 pace for 10 and then 8:20-8:30 for 2nd half---19.5 at 8:41 pace Total---58-60--58.7 Core, abs, stability and strength drills 3xweek Good week although I thought I would feel fresher after a step back week and I feel worse (not awful really but not rested) than the 76 mile week. It's a true sign of being right in the midst of the marathon cycle. August and early September provide the real test. MONSTER MILES here I come!
Thanks Holly Smile Don't try to come back too quick.... I've had lots of experience with injuries the last 5 or 6 years and have finally learned to take my time recouping. 2 more weeks of base building and then I'll try to get serious about some consistent speed work for Pasadena... I will probably drop my mileage back to mid 50's with 2 rest days for the start of marathon training.
I'm with everyone else Holly - take it slow and easy and take that Gym pass an use it for the 30 days with NO commitment! Thanks for keeping this going, Holly. I feel your pain on that hamstring/etc. It took me 2 months of only walking (2-3 hrs/day) for the pain to completely disappear... and another month of adding more and more easy jogging before I could run easy to medium w/o any vestige of pain. Take it easy, and don't rush it (very hard for a runner to do!) Plan for this week - just get in some running miles after missing the 1st 2 days due to babysitting chores, etc, related to the birth of a new grandson (he sure is a cute little guy.) Mon - off Tue - off Wed - 20 miles easy, nature park trails Thur - 2 miles easier, 6 miles easy, nature park trails Fri --- off (...rest tender ankle tendon) Sat -- 15 miles easy, old forest rock road Sun -- off Total -- 43 miles

The Jay race on Saturday includes 3-4 miles of running in a river-we got 2 inches of rain here in the Burlington area yesterday and another 2-4 inches is predicted for today with flood watches in effect until Friday morning-who knows what will happen..... Kelly Had a great race-finish time of 7:16:43-only 6 min slower than last year but the mud and the water was about 6 inches deeper. Placed 2nd Female Master!

                              Running out of mistakes!

Thanks Holly! Running injuries are quite a drag....six months from now you'll be glad you didn't push the recovery too fast. I've been over 40, for a number of weeks now, but this past weekend I realized how little ramp up time is left before Hartford! Grrr. So I've put a loose schedule together, but as I'm looking to sub-3 I need to ramp up (safely). I've been partial to Hal Higdon's plans, but I'm open to other suggestions! M - rest T - intervals schedule induced rest W - 5mi ez - 9 Hills at a hard pace T - 8mi Hills done, +2 points for load of rain-soaked clothes F - 4mi ez done S - 8mi at pace 7 hilly at pace S - 17mi long run 15.5 miles @ just over 8min pace Total 43.5 miles. I feel strong, prepping for a long and tougher week over 50 miles. Craig
-2009 running goals - sub-3 after Boston (probably VCM), 3 PRs, 2009 miles for the year, and no untreated injuries
