Good afternoon, all! Tried the site multiple times this morning, but I couldn't get in. Another fine Vista kickoff - sorry about the thunderstorms. You can send them my way - we had the yard hydroseeded, so we can use all of the moisture we can get. Dave - sounds like the PT did some good for you - good run! Tramps - don't you just hate it when the Garmin dies??? {{{{{{{Spareribs}}}}}}} - take care and keep us posted! Tom - nice run - hope your new Garmin arrives soon! CNY - way to go girl!! Perch - of course it's special if you ran with Tory ;-). dg - what's this gardening injury??? You haven't run in a week??? You were doing so well!!! What's up?? San Francisco was wonderful - couldn't have asked for better running weather (well except for all of the smoke from the widefires). It was 90 degrees the day we arrived, but the next several days were in the 50's and low 60's. I managed to get 39 total miles on the bayside trail. Getting up at 5:00 am was no problem, and I had the trail to myself until 6:00 when the rest of the area runners appeared. I encountered a family of skunks 3 out of 5 runs - fortunately I saw them before they saw me and we didn't have a smelly encounter. The California fresh fruits and vegetables were absolutely awesome - I dropped a couple of pounds on the trip because I was able to visit mostly healthy restaurants. Having acclimated to the low temps and humidity, it was a real shock to come back to the "oppressive" CT weather. The 12.5 miles on the trail yesterday nearly finished me. Our big error was sleeping in and not getting on the trail until after 8 am. The 6.87 hilly miles I did this morning weren't much better. If it stays this hot and humid, I'm going to have to think about carrying hydration on the shorter runs. Good runs to all!

Thanks everyone for all your concern. It really meant a lot to me today when I went to the doctor. I kept thinking, 'Geeze, now i have to write about all that happens today. So here it is. I saw my primary physician today and explained all that is going on with me. They did an EKG and sent me to the lab for blood work. He wants to see my cholesterol and rule out anemia, although he believes this is all BP and heart condition related. The EKG was abnormal, and had a different pattern to it from the one I had last year. He sat down with me and tried to explain those ups and downs and the pattern as it compared with last year's but it was all greek to me. He printed out a copy of it to give to my cardiologist next week. He also contacted the cardiologist to recommend the stress/echo once again, based on the EKG and the fact that my BP was higher than last year. He thinks the BP medication I am taking is no longer right for me but felt that he would defer that recommendation to the cardiologist, who will have the stress/echo results in front of him. I will have the blood results tomorrow as well. So really there is no news to report but it appears I am doing the right things. The cardiologist will be able to see how much worsening has taken place since my last stress/echo in January of '07. What I have is a mitral valve prolapse, aortic stenosis and some thickining of the right ventricle. The cardiologist talks to me in terms of helping me to achieve a normal life style when of course I want him to talk to me about competitive running, so we don't always have the same agenda. I will know more after the stress/echo results next week. And Dicky, no matter how badly you dance, it is not worse than me. Spareribs

Glad to hear you're looking into this, Ribs. I hope it turns out to be something as simple as your BP meds. Good luck.

        Be safe. Be kind.

What, competitive running isn't a normal life style? I think its the non-runners who aren't normal! Big grin Good luck with the cardiologist next week. I was thinking about the variety of folks who turned out for the half I ran on Saturday. A total of 820 people, ages 11-75, with finishing times ranging from 1:12:51 to 4:29:21. Some people lament the "gentrification of running" and all the mid-pack and back of the pack runners, but I think it's great. (Of course I'm in the back half of the pack myself.) With the current obesity epidemic, its great to see so many folks out there trying. And slower folks like me don't feel intimidated to show up for a race.

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

Spareribs-with all this concern over your health on everyone's mind I was no exception and tried out my best Spareribs impersonation today. Went out for my run, checked the sky, didn't look at the radar, got to the turnaround spot in my out and back and saw ominous clouds approaching. Turned in a negative split 10 miler today and managed to avoid lightning! Ribs if you want me to dispense advice to the less learned when you are at the doctor's office feel free to let me know, I am ready to answer the call. PS for anyone who doesn't know I hold Spareribs in the highest regard and this is my childish way of saying he is in my thoughts.

My thoughts exactly. Thanks for the update and please continue to keep us in the loop.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

Like breaking into Fort Knox getting in here today, but hopefully things will be smoother after the server change...or whatever the change is. Just wanted to say quickly, that Ribs is in my thought and Prayers too, and hope for a simple solution to what ever is wrong. You are quite the guy Ribs and respected by all here, not only as a great help and guide with running...but as a human being Smile Hope all are having a great day...now back to my 2 foot stack of paper work Sad - but looking forward to a 10 miler tonight Smile Tim

Running has given me the courage to start, the determination to keep trying, and the childlike spirit to have fun along the way - Run often and run long, but never outrun your Joy of running!

                  One day at a time

Best wishes, Ribs! Of course competitive running is normal! What is your doctor thinking? Wink Thanks for keeping us posted.
7 slow vacation miles this morning - starting out at ~6:30 am. The heat and humidity were almost (but not quite) tolerable so early in the morning. Another relaxing day today of doing pretty much nuthin'. Very weird for us, but strangely satisfying. Hmm - I think it's time for another margarita.

Me, too. I did 7 miles, too. Just like PDR (who looks fabulous in her new bathing suit, by the way). It helped being early that the sun was low in the sky, and that we stayed on the East side of the street (in the shadows). After the turnaround, there was a breeze in our faces, which helped as well. 'ribs -- glad you're taking care of it. It goes without saying, but please let us know how it goes with the cardiologist as well.

Ok, now I'm pretty sure Dark Horse is under a rock somewhere... 4.3 easy miles... well, easy till I got to the hill back up to my office. That had my legs complaining... feel a little dead-leg-syndrome after yesterday's run. DS2 should be in Portland about now... he was supposed to call me but of course he didn't... DS1 was at my desk when I got back from my run... Apparently he and a friend had someone complain about them zipping around campus in their golf cart and they were sent home. He insists they were just taking turns going back to the office for supplies... but makes me wonder. He says he's not fired, but was "dismissed" for the day early. Angry Hope he's welcomed back tomorrow... {{Spareribs}} hope it's something easily treated. I always wonder when medical professionals say "normal activities" if they really know what that might mean to some folks...!
Good luck Ribs! No run today but in my attempt to include some x training in my schedule this is week 2 and Monday called for some biking and weights. About 30 minutes of biking followed by some benching and curls. Larry

Evening Boomers. Like a lot of you, I tried to post earlier today without success. Ran my 10K route this morning in 59:10. Also wanted to let you all know that at 4:30 AM it's not as light as it was a couple of weeks ago... didn't summer just get here? Sad Spareribs - is no news good news? Glad your appointment was relatively uneventful. Please keep us up to speed, and take care with the running until you figure out what's going on. Absolutely mahvelous weather here - will try to run tomorrow (4th day in a row) if sore hip permits. Mileage totals for June totally sucked. Must stay focused, must stay focused... Jeanne
Be aware that the change on this web site is being done tonight. I did 3.68 miles this evening. It was meant to be an easy run and I succeeded at that. Doctor's are always cautious about saying anything when they are going to send you to the specialist. I am glad that you have followed this course of checking into the situation, Spareribs. It does help going to a doctor knowing you have about 100 people from all over the US, Canada, and Europe waiting for a report. Have a great evening folks. Joey
