Jackpot 100 USATF Championship Race report (Read 14 times)

Pain is my friend

Over the weekend I ran the 100 mile National Championship in Henderson NV.

I started at an easy pace but a bit faster than planned 8:35. Then backed it off to 8:45. It started to get hot at about 11. But I was ready for it. Heat training seemed much hotter than the race. I used ice and water to cool myself off. At about mile 75 I figured that would need to take off about 10 sec a mile or run 8:50 pace to make my goal. With 13 miles to go, I asked my wife what a 2 half marathon pace was because that’s what I needed to run. 9:09 pace. Right then I knew I will get my goal. I can do it. The only thing that would stop me was my right hammy. If I pushed too hard or strided out too much it would cramp. I cracked out my last mile in 7:30. The course was fairly flat. 35 ft per loop. But that adds up. 4,300 ft of vert. Wow that is a lot for what they call a flat course. Finished in 14:59, 5th male and 1st in the 40-44 age group. There were some crazy fast chicks. Camille broke the world record 12:41 for females. Amazing.

I had many PRs during the race.
