Pollen Mondaily (Read 26 times)

AT-runner

Tim

Walk at lunch.  I'm off my meds for a week so I can get new blood work next week.  Looks like DW made the right decision about not letting me do the Montour 24.  I guess I'll have to search for a "Golfers with Lyme" forum and bother them since I'm running less than even Mandy .

Bert (Montour 24), Craig (Montour 24) and Sue (Mendoncino 50k) - good luck with taper madness.

Bert - one piece of advice that I forgot to mention. Don't stop at your tent for anything until your planned interval.  I liked to stop every 6 miles or so. Later in the race you can change that, but if you stop too often, the down time really adds up, and you want to use your stop time to actually rest and get a break. If needed, have a small table and do grab and go.  The exception to the rule is to take care of any equipment issues ASAP (socks, shoes, chafing), or it can end your race later on. And don't forget the bug spray.

Who else has a race this weekend?

QOTD:  Any allergy sufferers?  My eye are driving me crazy with all this pollen. That's really the only symptom that bothers me. I sneeze a bit, but man, it sure does get my eyes all itchy. Doesn't help that I live in fruit country and all the peach and apples are blossoming.

    “Paralysis-to-50k” training plan is underway!

Hey, hey, hey, I ran a whole 7.7 miles last week.

We never kick anyone out of this place for not running, that's for sure.  So don't disappear on us, AT.  I'm looking forward to Dr. Jamie coming back eventually.

QOTD: Nope, I'm lucky not to have any allergies.

      Running is dumb.

I got some solid Bob Open training yesterday- 20 miles with 15-ish on snowshoes, wee bit sore this morning. We made a foray into the North Fork of the Blackfoot- just Saturday the organizer changed the start location as he was convinced we wouldn’t be able to get to the trailhead/campground in three weeks. After yesterday’s adventure, not sure we will with the new start location. We ran and into deep snow and ended up snowshoeing 3 miles to get to the trailhead (and another 7 to the patrol cabin). Lots of snow, but at least a few (welcomed) stretches of dry trails. Forecast is for 60’s for awhile, so should see some additional melting. What has me more concerned is the numerous fords we need to make- the North Fork is cranking, but so are the smaller creeks- will be interesting.

qotd: thankfully no, DW does suffer some, but not nearly as bad as some

        Endless trails

          Hi everyone,

I've been running sporadically, mostly on the weekends. I can still manage

a 7 mile loop with a few good climbs, so I'm not totally out of shape.

I've been lurking lately to try to catch up on what's happening around here, forgive

          me if I'm uninformed.

This past Saturday I was happily running on my favorite ridge about 3 miles from home

when I felt that undeniable pain in my calf. Damn! Try as I might I could not run, so I

had to hike back home. At least now I have a calf strain as an excuse for not running, but

I'm still a firm believer in 'active rest' so I'll be fine by the weekend.

QOTD: No allergies for me. So far.

welcome back!  sorry on your calf- if I have issues, it’s almost always my calves

Mandy - nice run. Yes, I'll still post my walks and occasional short runs.

Jon - good to hear from you.

Mike - looks like some swift moving water. By race time, the melting snow should really have some dangerous fords.

Planning on 5-7 miles later today, after I go do some killing .  The dandelions have been coming up so I've been spraying them almost every day. Actually think I'm winning the war, although I'm getting tired of it.

No taper madness here for me. Haven't been running enough to need a taper. I see a lot of walking in my future Friday and Saturday.

Good to hear you're still getting some running in Jon.

QOTD:  I've had sinus issues all winter. A lot of headaches requiring too much Ibuprofen. Taking Zyrtec and Flonase will help somewhat. Can't say that it's any worse now that the pollen is out.

                Thread killer ..

I DNF'd a 100 on Friday , it was in Utah they start a lot of their races on Friday . My knee gave it up about mile 54 and I had to call it . It's a bit better today I'm staying off it as much as I can for a couple days to let it calm down .

Another Kelly Agnew joke during the pre-race about hiding in the porta-potty . Those Utah folks aren't forgiving or forgetting .

QOTD : Yes bad allergies , which may seem weird in the desert but sage brush is bad .

A picture from the race , Salt Flats in Wendover Utah . This is the other side , the mud flats which were dry and still awful , there is about 6 miles of this .

Just planet of fitness routine so far today. Plan is for 5-7 miles on the easy side of the lake with the Lady. Hopefully the blue bells are still out.

No racing for me this weekend. I do know someone running a 6 day event overseas. Hungary I think. They are 4 days and 8+ hours into the face now and he is approaching 500km. Sort of funny watching the live feed and seeing some of the shuffling and often times some good solid running. Crazy.   Link: http://www.emusport.hu/en/klub/emu-sport-tv-en

QOTD: Never had much problem with allergies thankfully.

In dog beers, I've only had one.

                    I lost my rama

AT - Thanks again for all the knowledge and advice.  If nothing else, it will be a new and interesting experience, and I'm sure I will learn a lot.

warden - That's still a heck of a lot of snow.  I'm sure those water levels will be interesting to say the least!

Jon - I get calf pains too.  I find compression sleeves help quite a bit.  Hope it gets better soon.

Dreamer - I'm pretty sure you only win battles against those pesky things, never a war.  Looking forward to seeing you on Friday.  I'll plan to get there early to setup camp, then check-in to where we'll stay Sat night, then come back a couple hours prior to the race to lounge, and fuss, and fret restlessly.

Valerie - Sorry to hear about that race, but that's quite a heck of an effort!  Just that photo alone makes it look intimidating.  Wishing a speedy recovery.

XT - Wow a 6 day event in Hungary.  I'll check out that link shortly.

Rest day for me.  Will stop by REI after work to pick up more stuff for the race.

QOTD:  Luckily no spring allergies for me.  DW gets it pretty bad though and no OTC meds seems to help, so she just suffers through it.

                      3/17 - NYC Half

4/28 - Big Sur Marathon  DNS

                      6/29 - Forbidden Forest 30 Hour

8/29 - A Race for the Ages - will be given 47 hours

Val - hope for speedy recovery. Any knee pain before the race, or did it just pop up?  Kelly was from PA originally, and they joke about him here still.

XT - Multiday's are really popular around the world. A FB page called Running Against Time posts links to many events. Fun to see who's running them. Maybe DW and I will travel far someday and do a race. We're both wanting to try a 72 hr now, and travel sounds more fun than going to NJ for Three Days at the Fair.  Hope your friend hold up. Pretty awesome distance so far.

Edit - just looked at results, and not surprising, the average age is in the 50's.

Came home today as DW wanted to spend another night in the north. Kinda messed up my plans for a real long thing in the Kettle Moraine but what the heck. I'll try to do some mowing and still have enough time to get 12 or so trails.

Still watching web cams and tapping my foot. Some lakes up there north of the border are opening and others not so much so I may delay my trip by a day or so. Yet to be determined.

QOTD--I do a daily dose of zyrtec and a shot of flonase year round. So I'm just fine right now but when conditions reach their worst I will have minor issues but generally ok.

I would 100% do that, but I sure don't have the same skill set you have in the wilderness. I'd need to lean on someone (you) for some of the backcountry tasks. Hiking the AT and the Bob Marshall are 2 different skill sets. I'm great at following while blazes.

Just a quick run to my doctor's office, by car.

Got another day off work from that, and some more meds, which I'll happily take. Doc said with my blood pressure (low) I am lucky to be able to walk upright.

AT: I think I'll be in the same boat toward the end of the week, when I'll start running again. It seems every time I have worked up my way to running 6 miles somewhat comfortably, some illness steps in and sets me right back to square A1. But, just a mental strength test, it is.

Mandy: I think I ran 10 or 13. Don't want to make you feel bad, but now my distance feels a little more like an accomplishment.

warden: Wonderful pictures! I hope most of the snow will melt away quickly and you'll have access to the starting area without having to do the warmup before the race has started. Is this one of the "smaller creeks" you are talking about?

jonferg: Welcome to the club. Feels much better posting more often, for sure.

DD1: Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare?

valerie: 54 miles is quite an accomplishment, and I am sure the trail was not easy. Sorry for the DNF, but better than wrecking your knee permanently. I had severe knee pain at Eastern States 100, and I ran about 30 miles on it, and it was horrible. Miraculously, it took only a few days to heal up again, and I haven't had problems with it since (never run such elevation changes over such long distances since, either, but still). I hope your knee will heal up speedily, too, and stay quiet!!

XT: Hope you still catch some bluebells.

Berto: Enjoy the rest! I agree with AT's advice, try to keep the stop times to a minimum! Perhaps working with prepacked drop bags, labeled by distance for your planned stops saves you some time, as you always have the set of equipment ready that you will need until the next planned stop in a couple hours (regular extra food/salt, perhaps lights?, etc).

Harrier: I guess the ice should melt really quick now.

QOTD: I have lots of allergies, pollen, meds, gluten. I never had an allergy until I was about 25, then they came in quick succession. Oh well, I have learned how to handle most of them.

AT: My pollen allergy started in a similar fashion, I had itchy, stinging eyes for years, before it turned to allergic asthma (which went away again for the most part). Alaway eye drops are still my med of choice for the eyes. OTC allergy pills aren't helping me any more, so I'm on prescription pills during allergy season, which is almost all summer, especially April-July.

                                Run for fun.
