Aquathlons (Read 299 times)

under a rock

Thanks to a post by someone in this group I discovered that there are Aquathlons. I've always told my husband that I would do a run/swim combo but not a tri because I have no interest in cycling. So I'm pretty excited to see that there are a few Aquathlons out there. We won't be able to do any this year but we are thinking we both might aim to do one next year.

I'd like to hear about any that you guys have done. Even tell me about gear needed and the transition areas. I've got no clue what is needed for multi-discipline events. I admit that the transition area is the most intimidating idea to me right now.

I've entered some. They are some of my favorite events. Here are a few I know of. Unfortunately, these are on the west coast. Cycling is something I do to get to work sometimes or to cross-train. I don't race that discipline either.

As for equipment in the trasition area... you can go as simple a medium size towel to sit on while putting on your shoes and a squirt water bottle for a drink and rising your feet. You can wear wetsuits and have a basin with water in it to dip your feet into before putting your shoes on. Some people wear socks some don't. Before the race you should decide how to wear your race number. You can pin it to a pair of shorts you put on in the transition area or use a simple strap-like belt that is made for race numbers at triathalons, etc.

There is more and I am sure others can contribute. There is another group at RA for triathalons swim-cycle-run they would have a lot to say and may have old threads that are worth reading. Here are some races to get you started. May be one of them could be a combine vacation/race.

Thanks for the input and web sites! The transition area sounds like it's not as intimidating as I think it is.

There was a series of three aquathlons, just swim/run, held about 2 hrs from us this year and I'm hoping they'll do them again next year so I can try them. They start off  with really short distances at the first one and progress a bit longer with each one so I think that would be a great way for me to get started. Then later in the year there is a run/swim/run that is much longer that I would like to do, assuming In enjoyed the first series of aquatlons.

They are harder to find and I'll definitely have to drive a few hours but I think it will be a nice challenge.
