Williamsport to Harpers Ferry - our ride becomes an ordeal! Due to inconsistent information re trail conditions, we returned to the trail. It wasn't long before we encountered heavy mud from river flooding (amazing!). At first we fought threw, able to stay on our bikes, but eventually we were dismounting and slogging threw long stretches on foot. Also, lots of downed trees that we had to lift bikes over.

Exited the trail just as a downpour hit. Found shelter under a farm shed, in the company of a rusting tractor. Rode the roads to Sharpsburg, passing the Antietam battlefield park and lots of Civil War markers/monuments. Hills were manageable to Sharpsburg, where we again ran into and lunched with Greg and Becky. Rode the rest of the way with them, on killer, roller coaster hills, many of which had to be walked. Ribs were killing me every time I had to get on and off the bike.

The stairs up to the bridge into quaint Harpers Ferry were our final challenge, we thought, until we discovered the long, winding ascent out of the park (we probably could have taken a shuttle bus). A final, thrilling descent brought us to the welcome sight of the Quality Inn, that we happily realized was our destination. A powerful hose restored our bikes to respectable condition, and we again roomed with them.

Dinner at the Anvil Inn, an uphill trek but a downhill return, our finest dining of the trip. Comfortable room and outstanding food.

Getting out of town proved challenging. Hotel staff very helpful arranging a private driver to Dulles Airport rental van.
