Notes

Let me tell you about this wonderful race. Gary Allen who is a wonderful friend and the race director has made this event the finest race I have ever run. I strongly tell anyone doing an ultra this is the best. We took the boat over the morning of the race than set up our tent 400 yds from the start finish. It was tent city with everyone chatting and preparing for the race. Everyone gets a plaque with there name on it posted on the course. The course is constant small rolling hills on a road 2 miles long. This makes the race very intimate because you see runners coming and going. I actually made friends with 4 or 5 runners. All the runners give each other moral support all through the race. Jason Bui and I started out together going along at a comfortable pace. We could see the lead pack most of the way. We talked and I said if all went well the marathon marker would be a place to go after the leaders. I should have listened to my own advice. Around 22 I saw the leaders start to fade and my competitive nature took over and I ran a 6:35 mile. At 26.2 miles I was in the lead and on schedule for the record. A mile later I was in trouble, dehydrated and cramping, that was when I met a new friend Matt Hagen who ran with me for a long tough time and got me through it. With a mile to go I couldn't walk or jog a straight line, and don't remember a lot of it. Runners were coming by offering water, or support of whatever I needed. Lawrence Allen was on a bike encouraging me every step of the way. Susan jogging along and pushing me with her presence!!! At one point Larry runs into a house grabs a dog food dish and fills it with ice cold water. I remember him saying it was clean and my response was I don't care it could be dirty, it was the fluids of the gods. At the finish I collapsed and the next thing I remember is having ice packs on me and my sister Nina Bradford who came all the way from PA to give me support, and Susan hovering over me. I couldn't have been happier and knew that then and there I would be back ready to go at it next year!! That night we had a lobster dinner with beer. Smores and roasted marshmallows, fireworks, a bonfire and Karaoke. Later some pretty funny wild events from those free spirited ones
