This afternoon I ran what was probably the hardest workout I've ever done. On the track we did 1.5 mi in 7:22 (73-74/400m, through the mile in 4:54), 1 mi in 4:53 (was supposed to be a 4:42..), 800 in 2:21 (was supposed to be 2:16), and a 400 in 66 (was supposed to be 65). In between each piece on the track we did a 1 mi road loop tempo, hitting 5:30 each time. [So overall, 1.5 mi/1 mi tempo/1 mi/1 mi tempo/800m/1 mi tempo/400. Apparently this is a big workout that the Michigan team does each year, but of course much faster.] The rest between track pieces and tempo pieces was a 100m jog. This meant that we were doing a total of 5200m at 5K pace or faster broken up by 3 mi of tempo, with very little rest. The mile piece on the track was probably the hardest part, and the piece for which our pacing was off by the most, but overall this brutal workout went pretty well. I was really pleased to find that my ankle felt almost 100% better today (and the workout doesn't seem to have done any damage, but we'll know for sure tomorrow), and though I was working really hard for this, and feeling it, I dug deep and was able to hit times all the way through that I'm pretty pleased with. I was also pleased to find that on the last 400m, despite the 5.75 miles that I had already run hard, I was really able to find a whole new gear and push the last piece hard. I started last foor our group for that piece (the group being me, Chris Lee, and Scott) and Scott took off but Chris wasn't going as hard. I would have liked to go around him, sooner but couldn't actually do it until the last straight so I think I could have taken another second or so off of the time, but we also really pushed each other down the last straight as I overtook him which was fun and which helped both of us. All in all a really great workout that went great, and was the hardest work I've ever done on the track.
