Notes

Luther Alumni Mile. I was feeling pretty good so I decided to take the race out and make sure I would get a solid time. After Demo and Cholo dropped out I figured the only guys that would go with me would be the ISU Run Club guys and I also knew Chris has run a very fast 3k last week. I still figured I had outkicked him in the past and could hopefully do it again. The first lap was pretty quick but I felt great. The next couple of laps rolled by easily other than the feeling of blisters starting (I couldn't find my typical socks so I had to wear a different pair than usual, big mistake.) We hit the 800 right around 2:10 and I was still feeling good and planning on picking it up after one more lap. Chris got to the pickup before me though and went by me crossing the line with 3 to go. I debated trying to keep him on my shoulder here, and in retrospect think that might have been the better decision. I had no problem answering his move but I thought it would be nice to sit behind someone for a couple of laps before kicking. With 2 to go I still thought I would win but as we went into the last lap I just couldn't seem to turn it over like usual at the end of the race. Blisters were also as bad as I have ever had them in a race which wasn't helping me get a good push off my toes. I felt good about the race the rest of the day and I'm still overall pleased with it, but after seeing the splits I realized I my last lap really wasn't very good. I'm not sure if it was a faster pace, the blisters, or just not digging hard enough but a 32 is about as slow as I have ever closed a mile. If I could have turned it on for a 30-31 typical finish I would have been close to breaking 4:20. Still a good race, and Chris is in outstanding shape, but I'm planning on taking another shot at the mile this year and fully expect to run under 4:20 when I do it.
