Notes

Did 3x100 meter strides to warm up and drills of course. Strange first speed workout in 2.5 years... The goal was to do 72-73 and 36s and have it feel super relaxed with 2:30 and 1;30 rests. I figured I could at least break 4:50 in the mile right now. Nope, I doubt I could break 5 right now based on this. I tried to get out relaxed and boom 79. Took a 2:00 rest on the first one then upped it to 2:30 for the rest. The 72 was hard and I was actually tying up a little bit doing it. The wind was absolutely vicious on the homestretch, but that isn't an excuse. I have absolutely no speed and even less lactic tolerance. The purpose of this session was not to build lactic tolerance, but I also learned that I don't have the turnover either. I'm glad I did this, because I know that I have to work on speed proactively now. It's not just going to magically come back through tempo runs like so many jackwagons tell me. I need to actually get on the track and do speed work every week. I also think that biking does reduce speed, so I'm gonna cut that out. I think 200s are what I need to be doing at this point, building up to 3s and 4s gradually, as 400 felt really long and I don't want to be in any lactic state right now. The 200s started getting smooth toward the end and it was fun, that's why I love track. Relaxed speed is a beautiful thing, even though a 36 is speed for me at this point. I've got years to get the speed back, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't start working on it now. Thinking about how to incorporate hills and sprints in the future. Long way back!
